Enough with the fear of fat

In a society obsessed with body image and marked by a fear of fat, Kelli Jean Drinkwater engages in radical body politics through art. She confronts the public's perception of bigger bodies by bringing them into spaces that were once off limits -- from fashion runways to the Sydney Festival -- and entices all of us to look again and rethink our biases. "Unapologetic fat bodies can blow people's minds," she says.

AQUAPORKO!
AQUAPORKO! is the story of Melbourne's fat femme synchronized swim team sculling, egg beating and high kicking towards their first ever live performance. I started AQUAPORKO! with a group of friends who shared my love of camp spectacle and water dance. What started as a fun way to reclaim space in the public pool soon turned into a loyal sisterhood and a film that would gain international recognition.

The 'dancer's body' is fat: Force Majeure's Nothing to Lose
This is by far my favorite review of the "Nothing to Lose" live show, written by two of the most significant fat activists and academics in Oceania: Jackie Wykes — who started the Melbourne chapter of AQUAPORKO! (and stars in the film) and shaped my own education around fat activism for many years — and Cat Pausé of the blog Friend of Marilyn, who is a tireless advocate and scholar in fat studies from New Zealand.
Wykes, Pausé and Samantha Murray co-edited a brilliant anthology called Queering Fat Embodiment (2014).

Museum for Obeast Conservation Studies
The power of artistic and political satire is never to be underestimated. Through her genius project, the Museum for Obeast Conservation Studies, artist Rachel Herrick takes challenging fat hate, stigma and the 'dehumanization' of fat people to a whole new and poignant level. This project helped me to unleash my own 'Obeast' and has been hugely influential in many aspects of my own artistic practice.

Scottee
Scottee is a writer, broadcaster, performance artist and troublemaker from London who gave me my first taste of the spotlight many moons ago. He is responsible for my now-iconic homage to Grace Jones's 'Island Life' album cover, which continues to be one of my most recognizable images worldwide. Scottee has made many works exploring fatness and created 'Hamburger Queen,' a fat talent show in the UK.
