合成神經生物學家埃德·博伊登教授想知道:腦中微小的生物分子如何產生情緒、思想和情感呢?他想找出:是哪些分子的改變導致了癲癇、阿滋海默症這些腦異常疾病呢?以前的神經科學研究,用光學顯微鏡觀察,發現了腦神經元,但不足以看進裡面的生物分子或神經連結。他反向思考,是否能把這些微觀結構脹大而不失原狀,以利觀察呢?用於製造嬰兒尿布的可膨脹聚合物,成了更了解我們的大腦的關鍵。
