This documentary investigates body image and the industry leaders (myself included!) that are challenging society's unrealistic and dangerous standards of beauty. It’s a good primer on some of the methods used in the fashion industry to promote a narrow standard of beauty, and a look at some of the dangerous effects.

This historical timeline by Vogue writer Janelle Okwodu looks at how the last 10 years have ushered in a new wave of inclusivity in fashion. I am so honored to be working alongside all these inspiring thinkers!

This is Professor Kimberly Jenkins's groundbreaking field of study on the intersection of fashion and racial justice. Jenkins's work has laid a new pathway in academia that identifies and investigates the racist origins of fashion and who is considered beautiful. She also makes recommendations to move forward to a more just and equal industry by uplifting designers of color and teaching educational initiatives on race and fashion at global brands like Gucci and more.

The Model Alliance, a nonprofit research, policy and advocacy organization founded by Sara Ziff, promotes fair treatment, equal opportunity and sustainable practices in the fashion industry, from the runway to the factory floor. The organization has successfully changed the fashion industry in very real ways, from requiring private dressing rooms backstage at runway shows to providing legal action in response to sexual harassment to working for fair treatment of garment workers. (And I’m on the board!)

Open Style Lab is a nonprofit collaboration focused on creating wearable solutions for people of all abilities. They team designers, engineers and occupational therapists to conceive and build accessible wearables that address the needs with and for people with disabilities.

In order to have true inclusivity in the fashion industry, we need to have diverse decision makers behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera. This brief history of transgender designers like Gogo Graham and models like Tracey Norman helps to shine a light on the discrimination many trans trailblazers have faced as they become more visible.
