In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alan Webb

Alan Webb runs the Open Master’s Program, which helps self­directed learners create a peer­reviewed higher education in small groups who give them support and accountability. He organizes experimental peer-­led courses where everyone contributes to teaching instead of one dedicated instructor. Alan also works to build, connect, and grow the open education ecosystem through projects like Educate 20/20.

Ali Stoner

Ali Stoner is a fourth year at the University of Virginia, where she is majoring in Drama and Arts Administration. Ali was an Acting Apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and a stage manager and actor at the Heritage Theatre Festival. On grounds, Ali is involved in UVa Drama, UVa Arts Council, First Year Players, Pi Beta Phi, and many other art and leadership groups.

Allen Groves

Allen Groves has served as the Dean of Students at UVA since August 2007. Mr. Groves also serves as a member of the University’s Critical Incident Management and Threat Assessment Teams. In April 2008, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the North ­American Inter-fraternity Conference, where he serves as Chairman. Mr. Groves is also a member of the American Bar Association (ABA). Mr. Groves was inducted into the Raven Society in 1990.

Cass Sackett

Cass Sackett is an Associate Professor of Experimental Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics at UVA. He is the leader of UVA’s effort to study the Bose­Einstein Condensation of atomic gases. Cass received a Ph.D. from Rice University in 1998.

The Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers

CLAW is a loose affiliation of women arm wrestling each other to raise money for women­initiated causes in the Charlottesville community. The women of CLAW aim to empower all women and strengthen communities through theater, arm wrestling, and philanthropy. The wrestlers celebrate the Charlottesville community and the joy of performance.

Gretchen Wallace

Gretchen Wallace is the founder and leader of Global Grassroots, a nonprofit aimed at the creation of a community of conscientious change agents to promote the empowerment of women in the developing world. Gretchen is also a producer of an Emmy­-nominated documentary, a published author, and nominee for CNN’s Hero of the Year award. Gretchen attended UVA as a Jefferson Scholar, and graduated in 1996 with a BA in Foreign Affairs. Gretchen also has an MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business.

Jennifer Scapettone

Jen Scappettone is an assistant professor in the Department of English at the University of Chicago. Jen is the author of Killing the Moonlight: Modernism in Venice, the editor and translator of Locomotrix: Selected Poetry and Prose of Amelia Rosselli, and a published contributor to numerous journals and anthologies.

Marie Schact

Marie Schacht is working as an Independent Consultant, and she was formerly a Program Manager at University of Virginia Foundation and a former Marketing and Outreach Coordinator for the Morven Program at University of Virginia Foundation. Marie is a graduate of the Architecture school at UVA.

Pamela Moran

Pamela Moran has had a long career in education, culminating in her role as superintendent of the Albemarle County Public Schools. In 2010, Moran was appointed to the Governor’s Commission on Higher Education, and she currently serves as past president of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. She has a B.S. from Furman University and an M.Ed and Ed.D from the University of Virginia.

Ross Baird

Ross Baird is the Executive Director of Village Capital, a venture capital firm that evaluates seed-­stage projects. Ross also serves as an Investment Analyst with First Light Ventures, where he has helped build a 20­enterprise portfolio over the past three years. He also has on­-the­-ground experience in Hyderabad, India, with the Indian School Finance Company. He has a MPhil from the University of Oxford, where he was a Marshall and Truman Scholar, and a BA from the University of Virginia, where he was a Jefferson Scholar, and has started two independent initiatives focused on civic participation.
