TEDxMiddlebury: Research, Rethink, Rebuild focuses on the process of problem-solving and the ways that we interact with this process as individuals and as members of communities. We have a diverse group of speakers who, in the spirit of TED, will each give 18-minute talks related to their work and life experience. Our lineup of 11 speakers includes a microbiologist, a food justice activist, a transportation entrepreneur, a slam poet, and a parks commissioner, among others. Also speaking will be Middlebury student Alec Macmillan '14 and Middlebury professor Steve Trombulak.

Derek Amato

Growing up in the midwest, the eldest of 2 children, Derek was a competitive athlete. The now divorced father of 3, held many corporate positions, and at one point was left homeless from a devastating financial loss. In 2006 a severe concussion changed Derek's life forever, when he discovered the immediate ability to play the piano. Derek would later be diagnosed with two rare conditions, "Acquired Savant Syndrome" and " Synesthesia.".
