Angela Huang

Student from Shanghai Qibao Dwight, Class of 2025
Angela Huang is a passionate thinker and an empath, thriving to collect all the puzzle pieces of human experiences through compassion. Through volunteering and her involvement in communities, she was able to find her ignition in the world. She aims to reflect on both interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships across cultures and decode the complexity of how we respond and integrate into new environments. Between the mosaic of her past living abroad and a profound appreciation for the present and future, she will delve into exploring her inner passions and finding a sense of balance within.

Annie Kuang

Student from Shanghai Qibao Dwight, Class of 2024
Annie is an enthusiastic explorer dedicated to uncovering possibilities within herself and the world. People often question their self-awareness, and the contemplation of the meaning of life is a prolonged journey. Philosophical theories may serve as a spark of insight, but the potential for self-awareness goes far beyond that. She divides her self-awareness into three stages in the process of growth, finding corresponding answers to her self-questioning at different stages. If, unlike in "The Merchant of Venice" that everyone plays their own roles, when all external responsibilities are stripped away, the proposition of "I am my own" may become a fallacy. Therefore, she hopes to share her insights into the process of self-discovery through this speech.

Lea Huang

Student from Shanghai Wenlai Middle School Grade 7
Lea Huang, a seventh-grade student at WHIS, is passionate about electronic gadgets and modern culture. She loves making new friends and has a strong curiosity about life and distant places, which led her to travel solo to New Zealand at the age of six. Lea remains connected with friends she made during her travels. Last year, she attended a summer school in the UK and flew home alone on a twelve-hour flight. Independence, courage, and resilience define her growth. Growing up in a traditional cultural environment, Lea has always been intrigued by the blend of traditional and modern, East and West. While exploring foreign museums, she encountered Chinese porcelain and calligraphy, sparking her curiosity about their stories and the transcendent nature of civilizations. This led her to ponder the boundaries of art and language

Student from Shanghai Wenlai Middle School, Grade 7
Meet Rebecca Yang, a Grade 7 student at WHIS. She discovered her love for reading at the age of seven, and since then, she has explored a wide range of original novels in English. One of her all-time favorites is the Hunger Games series, which she re-reads every year to deepen her understanding of the story. As she read more, her English skills improved, and she developed excellent critical thinking skills that helped her perform well in international English debating competitions. In 2024, her team won the team championship of the junior group of the World Schools Debating Competition, a remarkable achievement that she is undoubtedly proud of. She also founded the Hokmah Debate Club at her school, where students can exchange ideas and share life insights. Through literature, writing, and debate, she hopes to combine the wisdom of the East and the West with philosophical ideas, not only to achieve academic excellence but also to practice these ideas in daily life.
