TEDx Lubowa is an independently-organized local event that will take place on July 1st, 2023 at Galaxy International School Uganda in Lubowa. The event aims to bring together a diverse group of speakers and attendees from all walks of life, including youth, leaders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and global icons. By providing a platform for intellectual conversations, TEDx Lubowa seeks to find innovative and collaborative solutions to the challenges facing Uganda and inspire positive change. The event is aligned with TED's mission to spread ideas globally and provide licenses for individuals and groups to host local TED-style events.

Uganda is a country with a rich and diverse cultural heritage, known for its natural beauty, cuisine, research and medical advancements, intelligent people, fashion,art, scientific advancements, music, and traditions. With an estimated population of over 45 million people, it is one of the most populous and influential countries in East Africa. Despite its many strengths, Uganda also faces challenges such as social inequality, economic challenges, and environmental concerns. TEDx Lubowa aims to address these challenges by providing an independently-organized platform for people to share innovative ideas and perspectives, and to inspire discussion and collaboration towards positive change. By bringing together thought leaders, change-makers, and curious individuals from various sectors and backgrounds, TEDx Lubowa strives to build a diverse and dynamic community that can work together towards a brighter future for Uganda.

She is the Founder/CEO of an award-winning youth-led startup in Uganda called Nimarungi. The startup harnesses the power of data and information, capacity-building programs, and other employability practical skill sets to eradicate education inequality, increase student resilience, and smoothen their transition from school to work. Sabrina has also done extraordinary work as a youth/student leader on school, national, and global levels. Her 8+ years of experience as a leader extend across team building, result-oriented project management, recruiting members, mentoring and motivating them, as well as institution strengthening. She has dedicated most of her time to coming up with strategies harmonizing processes, people, and technology. Prior to founding Nimarungi, Sabrina worked with Technovation as a student ambassador where she recruited, mentored, and motivated over 50 girls in Kabale district and trained them in business development, pitching, and coding with MIT App inventor for the Technovation Challenge. Later on, during her high school vacation, she worked with Oysters and Pearls as an Assistant Director for women/girls program where she mentored over 150 girls and trained them in business development as well as business pitching. One of Sabrina’s biggest achievements is the Undergraduate Talent Tech and Entrepreneurship Programme (UTTEP) she conceptualized, led, and launched early this year. UTTEP is an 8-week program aiming at supporting university students to discover, monetize, and scale their talent, skills, technological innovations, and business initiatives. The program is spread throughout the academic year, and the launch day invited over 200 university students from various universities across the central region of Uganda who exhibited their products and went through training on product and business development, funding, and storytelling. Outside of work, Sabrina loves talking to people and understanding their thought processes and behaviors. She enjoys taking walks, analyzing surroundings, observing daily human activities, listening to music, and even dancing, despite not being very skilled at it. She finds self-development and intellectual books fascinating and has recently started painting, showing fair proficiency. While she prefers staying indoors, she considers creating and building things from scratch not just work, but also a hobby. Sabrina believes in the concept of randomness and acknowledges her complicated personality, which can be both incredibly sociable and affected by social anxiety. Her future goals revolve around her startup Nimarungi, aiming to become the response everyone has been looking for in the Ugandan Education System by introducing more meaningful learning approaches to increase resilience and a growth mindset among learners. In the near future, they intend to build more realistic and impactful performance assessment tools than traditional examination grades. On a personal level, within the next 5 years, Sabrina is working towards blending Law and Technology.

Doglas Onencan

Douglas Onencan is a remarkable innovator and developer from Uganda. He is known for his groundbreaking inventions and commitment to using technology for humanitarian purposes. Douglas has an impressive portfolio of projects, including Eyebyorets, an assistive device for the visually impaired, and LiZ, an electric car designed to surpass Tesla's vehicles. He has also worked on the Kasuubo-x series of helicopters for agricultural spraying and locust control.

Douglas Onencan is a Ugandan inventor, born on May 1st, 1999, in Kalongo, Agago District. From a young age, he was fascinated by metal and creativity, which eventually led him to invent and innovate. Onencan attended Dr Ambrozoli Memorial Nursery and Primary School and later joined Busoga College Mwiri for his O-level education, sponsored by MasterCard Foundation through BRAC Uganda. He was the second-best student in his class from S1 to S4. In 2016, Onencan won the Best Speaker in the Greater Kampala Region award at Nabisunsa Girls' School.

Juan de Francisco Rasheed

Juan de Francisco Rasheed is a leader and strategic expert with a proven track record of success. As the General Manager at M-KOPA Uganda, he manages a team of 300 staff and an extensive agent network to deliver services to 250,000 customers across the country. Under his leadership, the business grew 10x within three years. Previously, Juan played a vital role in M-KOPA’s expansion as the Group Head of Strategy and Chief of Staff to the CEO. Prior to that, he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company where he advised on high-impact projects worldwide. With a diverse background, including co-founding a start-up in Beijing, publishing as a photojournalist in Beirut, and moonlighting as an open-format DJ across the region, Juan combines a passion for learning with a knack for bringing people together. Juan graduated with a first-class degree from the University of Cambridge and is studying for an Executive MBA at Strathmore University in Kenya. He has been based in East Africa since 2016.

Kenneth Mugabi

Kenneth Mugabi is an award-winning afro-soul artist and songwriter from Kampala, Uganda. Through his music, Mugabi empowers his listeners, particularly men, by using storytelling. His songs depict African love stories and shed light on male vulnerability. Mugabi aims to address the absence of father role models in Ugandan society and connect with young men on various aspects of their lives.

Mugabi's musical journey began in high school, where he started writing songs. This passion led him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Music at Makerere University. However, eager to embark on his career, he left his studies to develop his unique sound as a songwriter and performer, setting himself apart from his peers. In 2016, Mugabi released his debut album, "Kibunomu," which featured a blend of traditional ndingidi music with modern beats. The album gained popularity, particularly the tracks "Naki" and "Kibunomu." Mugabi's first concert took place in October 2018 at the National Theatre and was a sold-out show. The following year, Mugabi released his second album, "Ugandan," which included the hit single "Kwegomba." The song received significant airplay on radio stations, contributing to the album's success. Mugabi held his second concert at the Design Hub in Kampala, which also sold out in June 2019.

Mbanda Shyaka

Ugandan Entrepreneur with CodeImpact

My name is Mbanda Shyaka. I am a 45-year-old entrepreneur and community leader. I have a bachelor's degree in food science and technology, and I am passionate about using technology to help people. I recently graduated from the Centre for Humane Technology, and I am now working to advocate against extractive technologies like social media. I also run a side project called Karibu Shop, which sells natural skin and hair products made from locally sourced shea butter. In my free time, I cultivate my body and mind through exercise, meditation, and breathwork. I believe that it is important to take care of our physical and mental health, and I want to live up to my highest potential. I hope that my journey can inspire other African youth to stand up, be strong, and be counted.

Thatcher Nakimuli Mpanga

Thatcher Mpanga Nakimuli leads the Product Design Division at Kiira Motors Corporation, the leading manufacturer of E-Mobility Solutions in Uganda, to develop innovative and ground-breaking mobility products, services and infrastructure aimed at solving the needs of the mobility non-consumers in Uganda. She has been instrumental in the development of the Kayoola EVS, the first electric bus built in Africa, for Africa; the Kiira EVS Concept, a hybrid sedan; and the establishment of the Kiira Vehicle Plant, the first green E-Mobility plant anticipated to produce 5,000 vehicles annually at full production capacity. She is a registered Architect with the Architects Registration Board of Uganda with a Master of Science in Integrated Product Design from Brunel University London, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Architecture from Makerere University, Kampala Uganda and is a member of the Uganda Society of Architects.
