Theme: Because We Care

This event occurred on
February 24, 2023
Cardiff, Cardiff
United Kingdom

“Because We Care, " a short, simple expression that opens the door to extraordinary interactive ideas and heightens our awareness of existing problems in our community. This theme allows a diversity of topics to be discussed, ranging from phenomena or problems happening in our society to technological and scientific advancements affecting billions worldwide. Increasing awareness of specific issues enables us to see beyond the surface and understand it from multiple perspectives. Only then can we influence the outcome.

Students and staff from our college and its sister college, Cardiff Sixth Form College Cambridge, will be bringing forward ideas that stimulate dialogue on topics daily interactions rarely cover. Through providing a platform for them to share their stories, we firmly believe that this TEDxYouth event will be a milestone in building a community of young adults who are conscious of their identity as global citizens, being aware of their current and future roles in the world.

Everything happens when we keep our eyes and ears open, engage in conversations that inspire and provoke, and reflect on what we can do to take a step forward — Everything happens when we decide to care.

Janet Lau

AS Student @CardiffSixthFormCollege

While she’s now studying towards A-levels in Economics and Politics, she also often overthinks what she sees in her textbooks and exam papers, challenging every concept presented to such a level that it gives her an existential crisis. Her second favourite thing to do is to bring these questions to the cafeteria table at lunchtime so her friends can all share their own perspectives on her frequent mental debates. Janet invites you to join her at her lunch table: to challenge the assumptions we’ve always had of our lives and our society, and to bring your fresh new take to the table.

Niki Hung

AS Student @CardiffSixthFormCollege
Niki is an AS Student from Hong Kong. Having suffered the loss of a very close relative at a very young age, Niki has observed that when medicine is faced with elderly with unfixable conditions, there is a slight problem regarding how we deal with them. Oftentimes, it can be observed that medicine’s priority when faced with frailty is the prolong their mortality, yet rarely does it acknowledge that the vulnerable people themselves also have priorities that extend beyond just sustaining life. Niki is passionate about understanding the true meaning of mortality and how medicine has changed the process of ageing, which was for centuries viewed as a natural process which ultimately has transformed into a medical process of sustaining mortality.
