In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

David Chen

IB Student
A senior at Port Moody School, David is honoured to be one of five speakers for the first iteration of TEDxYouth@PMSS. Ever since experience walking up to the podium and making his first speech in elementary school, David has had the privilege of experiencing the many highs and lows of the enthralling world of public speaking. The life lessons he has learned and the friendships he has gained thus far can only be described as invaluable. It is his most fervent hope that his speech at TEDxYouth@PMSS 2023 can inspire and incite new ideas. Outside of TEDx, David can be found practicing Harry Potter Spells, rewatching Code Geass for the 8th time, and craving ramen and McDonald’s. Above all, David is eager to meet like-minded individuals and spend a monumental afternoon filled with creativity, innovation, and inspiration.

Emma Liu

IB Student
At the first iteration of TedxYouth@PMSS, Emma Liu will be sharing her analysis of the impacts of nature and nurture during adolescent growth. In her 11th year at Port Moody Secondary, Emma frequently makes an appearance at other schools to film sports games, host leadership events, or help with fundraising events. She is experiencing a teetering between nature to nurture herself and the influence of these two balancing elements has always intrigued her. Emma is honored to be able to share with everyone the extensive research and personal cases shedding light on nature vs nurture at the event.

Kobe Li

IB Student
Kobe is a grade 11 student at Port Moody Secondary. As his name suggests, he is a basketball fanatic. In addition, Kobe is involved in a multitude of extracurriculars and sports. He believes that many life lessons can be learned through competition in sports. One of the most important lessons or skills includes being self-confident. Kobe is pleased to share his journey of learning self-confidence and inspire others as a speaker on the first iteration of TEDxYouth@PMSS. Kobe hopes to inspire others, as the quote, he lives by states that “the most important thing is to try and inspire people so they can be great in whatever they want to do” - Kobe Bryant.

Richard Mou

Pre-IB Student
Richard is a 10th Grade student in the IB Diploma Program at Port Moody Secondary School. Throughout his daily life, he has noticed countless times where suspense has been utilized in all sorts of ways including daily conversations, as well as in advertising. Apart from public speaking, Richard is an avid debater and loves to play board games.

Shafei Waqar

IB Student
Shafei Waqar is a 12th Grade student entering his final year of IB at Port Moody Secondary. When he first immigrated to Canada, he witnessed a mass misportrayal of his own culture and other minorities in the media, and in 2022, is eager to share his opinions on the negative effects of stereotypes and misrepresentation in the media at the first iteration of TEDxYouth@PMSS. On his own time, Shafei can be seen reading and watching his large backlog of novels and TV Shows or joking around with his friends and family. Shafei is nervous but ready for a great day of sharing ideas, learning, and maturing into a wonderful speaker and thinker.
