In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Joshua Weitzman

I am the Executive Director of Alpha Resource Center of Santa Barbara, an organization that empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). My introduction to this amazing community happened 15 years ago at the birth of my youngest daughter, Hannah. She has Down syndrome. I don’t think anyone in my life has taught me more. She’s changed me in ways I never thought possible. My passion is making the people around me better. I’m excited by the unique talents of each person. I believe perspectives are seldom wrong or right, but often incomplete. A great day begins on my bike. I always wanted a daughter and ended up with three. I also have a son who we adopted from Hong Kong who, like his sister, has Down syndrome. My wife, Jamie, and I have been married for 23 years.

Under her grandma's nurturing wing, Fleurie learned to work hard and to love and care for others. Thus she grew up with the self-confidence to follow her dreams. She named her daughter, Marguerite, after her grandmother. Through her stories, Fleurie shows the beauty and culture of Africa and creates a heroine that children can look up to. Whitney Roemer

Conservation Educator
I had the privilege of growing up in the Michigan country, surrounded by so much life. We gardened, knew the name of every bird, butterfly and flower, and spent much of our time outside. I was raised with the idea that we are a part of the ecosystem and I wanted to learn everything about my wild neighbors. That connectedness has taken me all over the world and is what eventually landed me in conservation education here in Santa Barbara. I want to help others find their passion for the planet and the understanding that we are all in this together. I’m driven by the kids I work with every day that already start with so much curiosity and a draw to nature. If we can retain that as adults, imagine what the planet may look like.
