x = independently organized TED event

Theme: Under the Rose

This event occurred on
October 19, 2022
Edogawa, Tôkyô
Japan

Under the Rose is the English translation of the Latin phrase, 'sub-rosa’ – denoting secrecy, or confidentiality. Every individual possesses a hidden side of themselves, an aspect of their identity carefully kept a secret from everyone in their lives. Every topic and idea has an unknown perspective worth sharing. Our event aims for its speakers to delve into the deep recesses of their topics and stories, bringing to light ideas that have not been widely showcased before.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Chaeran Jin

High School Student
I am a 10th-grade student at GIIS Tokyo, who is very intrigued by psychology, psychiatry, and philosophy. I firmly believe that these fields have the power to improve our quality of life. My goal is that my take on the subject will make your life a little easier and more enjoyable.

David Macdonald

Vice President Networks Japan, Warner Bros Discovery
Born in Canada, raised in Germany, I call Japan home. I have enjoyed a 25-year career in the front ranks of digital media, from mobile phone content to streaming with NTT DoCoMo, Disney, YouTube and recently Warner Bros Discovery. My chosen field is digital media but my calling and passion are to help others develop a global mindset, from cross-cultural communication, diversity, equity and inclusion, to leadership presence and influence.

Jaylon Carter

Chair of Black Lives Matter Tokyo
I am a social media marketing consultant, former national labour union rep and executive officer, and a Hip Hop artist who performs under the stage name Timid. I'm currently the chair for BLM Tokyo, an organization that educates on racism and discrimination.

Levi Casola

University Student
I am an international business student at Temple University Japan, and a professional calligrapher and graphic designer. I have been doing calligraphy for almost 8 years, and practice daily for at least one hour, if not longer. I am also a soccer player, coffee shop owner, Twitch streamer, and writer. I try my best to do everything I do in an effort to bring light to others around me.

Nadia Akashi

High School Student
I am a 9th grader navigating the ceaseless conundrums of high school at GIIS. As skeptical as I am about the challenges ahead, I have profound love for Business Studies and Economics and hopes to pursue one of them in the future. Which one, you may wonder? Well, that's up to future Nadia to decide. Fortunately for future Nadia, she won't ever have to worry about running out of cynical commentary to impart, thanks to the sheer abundance of True-Crime podcasts accompanied by Dystopian books that I consume.
