Theme: Against The Current

This event occurred on
March 4, 2023

This year's TedxDalhousieU event tackles a wide range of issues and social topics surrounding going against the current. Defying or improving set ideas and concepts accepted by society is no small task; we aim to shed light on this process in varying disciplines.
There are four subthemes for our event:

Disproving scientific studies-stigmas of replicating studies
- The aim is to highlight the pushback and criticism that scientists often receive when they come forward after replicating a scientific study and find inconsistent results in the original data. This includes scientists that have replicated their own work and found that secondary results don’t match those of their initial study.

Adversity in accessibility for people with disabilities
-Opening the conversation about the difficulty that people with disabilities have when facing their day-to-day life, and the accessibility or lack thereof that’s present.

Make it or break it: The adversities of succeeding in the arts
-This sub-theme is about the challenges of becoming successful in the arts. The arts are often known to be extremely competitive, which drives many people out of the industry. This sub-theme will delve into the difficulties that individuals have faced throughout the development of their careers.

The ethics of going against the current
-An ethical analysis of the morality of defying what’s accepted by society. For example, the morality of performing scientific studies without peer review. An ethical approach can be taken across many different sectors such as tech, science, medicine, and social sciences.
