TEDxUniversityofJohannesburg will be hosting its fourth independently organised TEDx event. Our vision is to showcase the fascinating thinkers and leaders at UJ & South Africa. They will get together for an exciting day of presentations and discussions that will inspire new ideas and opportunities across the continent.
This year, we will be hosting a hybrid event exploring the theme RECONNECT on the 25th of August 2022 from 10h00 – 14h00.

Beate Stiehler-Mulder

Senior Lecturer, the Marketing Coordinator at the Department of Marketing Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ)
Dr Beate Stiehler-Mulder is a Senior Lecturer, the Marketing Coordinator at the Department of Marketing Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the W&R Seta Leadership Chair: Gauteng. She holds a PhD in Industrial Economics and Management from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. She has built a strong background of work, research, and publications in South African and international journals and conference proceedings, where she has presented broad research on marketing, branding, retail, digital and consumer subjects. As the current W&R Seta Chair: Gauteng, she aims to provide a platform that develops critical thinkers and problem-solvers in the Retail industry, conduct relevant retail and consumer research, and launch innovative education and work-based learning experiences - all in the spirit of advancing and professionalizing the wholesale and retail industry.

Cheryl Benadie

Author, Communication, Publishing, Training and Development, and Fundraising.
Cheryl Benadie has experience in journalism, communication, publishing, training and development, and fundraising. She also works as a speaker, author, trainer, and facilitator. She has spent the last 22 years moving between 14 different job titles, eight different industries, and three different occupations, so she is well-versed in the process of constantly reinventing herself to meet changing working requirements.

Claire Mawisa

Investigative Journalism
With years of experience in the radio and television sectors, Claire is a professional broadcaster. In addition, she has a modelling career that launched her to success at the age of 15 when she became the cover girl for Cosmopolitan magazine. Currently, she is a presenter on Carte Blanche, South Africa's most watched news and current affairs program, which airs on MNET.

Leonie Van der Merwe

Legal/ Governance Professional
Leoni van der Merwe has delivered measurable successes working alongside South Africa's most decorated professionals as a legal/ governance professional and company secretary. She is completing a doctorate in law focusing on the rights of persons with disabilities in the workplace. She is a lecturer in the Faculty of Law of the University of Johannesburg, where she teaches Business Law, Labour Law and Law of Succession to law and non-law students. Leoni plays the role of a change agent in numerous capacities in the broader community.

Mosa Kaiser

Film, Television and Radio host
Mosa graduated with honours from the University of Witwatersrand with a degree in film and television. She has been nominated for awards as a radio and television host, businesswoman, actress, voice artist, and agent at MLA South Africa. She has recently joined commercial radio Mix FM hosting a weekend breakfast show from 07:10 Saturdays and Sundays.

Tebogo Mashifana

Senior Lecturer: Chemical Engineering, University of Johannesburg
Dr Mashifana is a senior lecturer, researcher, and head of the chemical engineering program at the University of Johannesburg. She has published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as numerous conference papers and book chapters. The Engineering Council of South Africa has also recognized her as a Professional Engineering Technologist. She devotes her time to empowering young women and girls by encourag­ing the development of their human potential in STEM subjects!
