Bringing the community together from across Shanghai and beyond, TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghai aims to build community by bringing people together around inspiring discussions, sharing of ideas, innovative works and creative workshops. With inspiring talks from young people, unique artistic performances, creative exhibitions solving real-world problems, and opportunities for learning and sharing together, the event will be an enriching experience for the whole family from early childhood to grandparents.

Abbey Wei

We are a group of Year 9 students from YCIS Shanghai Secondary Puxi. Our group consist of 4 outstanding pupils: Abbey Wei, Juliana Cho, Rosie Lim, and Jacob Liu. In the spirit of the TEDx mission “ideas worth sharing” we have brought together a discussion of our experience of a striking project to share. With our presentation we hope to bring a future reference for improvement in project-based learning. We hope to inspire more significant projects in schools beyond our YCYW community.

Azalea Wong

Student Researcher
Azalea Wong is a year 12 student attending YCIS Shanghai. She likes many genres of music, anthropology, and snow sports. Tasha Williams is also a student at YCIS Shanghai. She is an avid reader, enjoys illustrating comics, and is curious to learn more about the world around her. Under support from their teachers and peers, they conceptualized a TEDx talk, but neither anticipated how much the both of them and their friendship would gain from this experience.

Betty Zhang

Betty Zhang is a Grade 5 student from Yew Wah Lingang, Shanghai. She practices playing the piano almost every day because she loves playing it. Due to her hard work and persistence, she has won multiple awards in different piano competitions. Not only does she play the piano but she is also trying her hand at the ukulele. In her free time, she practices the ukulele twice a week and aims to improve herself enough to be able to join competitions. She has reached dance level 9, and is practicing for level 10. In the school library, she likes reading books about animals.

Calvin Chen

Calvin Chen is a Grade 6 student from Yew Wah Lingang, Shanghai. He enjoys reading horror stories, watching adventure movies and going fishing with his dad. To stay active and healthy, he casually plays soccer and badminton at school with his classmates and outside of school with his friends. Calvin has also been playing the violin for the past four years and is part of the school string orchestra. He grew up with lots of technology around him and has always had a keen interest in robots and the future.

I am Carina, and I currently attend YCIS Shanghai Puxi in Year 10. Through my talk, I hope to share my experience with indecision as well as motivate myself and others to become more efficient with our decision making.

Carry Yang

I am Carry Yang, a year 9 student from YCIS Shanghai Puxi Secondary. After moving from the Northeast of China all the way southward to an international school here in Shanghai, I’ve experienced the diversification of different regional customs and cultural styles. I am really interested in Ted talks, and sharing viewpoints with others. I am also an outgoing and optimistic student who has a burning passion for comedy. It is my honor to share my talk about comedy with everyone.

Dannie and Daelle are 11-year-old identical twins from South Korea, currently attending Y6 at YCIS Shanghai Puxi. They share a lot of interests such as playing the violin, swimming, and Taekwondo, but they also like different things: Daelle loves reading novels and singing while Dannie enjoys public speaking and playing games. Despite being compared to each other often (even this bio has comparisons!), Daelle and Dannie love being twins and enjoy each other’s company. They hope to have another talk in the future about their exciting adventures and challenges as twins.

Jerry Li

Jerry Li 李聿桐 is a student studying in Shanghai Lingang, China. He is interested in creating art and treasures different ways of explaining his imaginative world of drawing. Jerry enjoys showing people how he can turn something as plain as paper into a cascade of different ideas and unique combinations of real-world objects. He started drawing when he was only four years old, now with nine years of continuous improvement and discovery, he can now draw almost anything imagined or unimagined.

The speaker, Jian Yu, is a 14-year-old multicultural child born in South Korea and received education both in South Korea and China. She experienced pressures and stress from her surroundings, and for the longest time, she learned for learning’s sake. However, Jian gradually realizes that education requires a different attitude. Therefore, she is interested in the education system and other social, philosophical, and mental issues and wants to motivate those students experiencing the same thing.

In the last two years, we’ve managed to see Hope Beans, a service project we are a part of, grow and transform into something that has improved the lives of many. We hope to share our view on a pressing matter in today’s society, one which affects every single individual, whom we believe are deeply inter-connected.
