Theme: Generation Next

Generation Next celebrates the ideas and work that are being done to
impact our community and change the future of the world. This change
starts in many different areas. It starts in community service, water
conservation, recognizing mental health, intuitive medicine, and
developing a winning mindset. Each person has the power to change
the world for generations to come. By utilizing our individual strengths,
we can come together to make a difference in the world.
Making an impact in the world that affects generations to come starts
with an idea. It is ideas coupled with action that shape the present and
make a change. Our TEDx 2022 theme of “Generation Next” aims to
celebrate the ideas within our community that have the possibility to
change the world for the better.
We live in a beautiful world because of its diversity. Each person is able
to make their own impact. The possibilities to make a change are
endless. A schoolgirl can be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, more
than $300 million can be raised to combat AIDS, wishes for children
diagnosed with critical illnesses can be granted every 34 minutes, and
more than $2.1 billion can be raised for juvenile diabetes research.
Think about how your own strengths and passions can affect our
community and the world. Now make this idea a reality. Make a change
that will impact generations to come.

Art Berlanga

Coach

Art Berlanga, “Coach B,” is an educator, football coach, motivational speaker, winner mindset coach, leadership coach, and author. Coach Berlanga has been teaching both young people and adults for 12 years and coaching football for 15. Coach B has been awarded the KSBW Action News 8 "Golden Whistle Coach Award" for his leadership and influence in his community; named Coach of the Year; recognized as the “Leader of the Year” for the City of Gonzales, CA; awarded the “Semper Fi Coach Award” of Northern California by the U.S. Marine Corps and Glazier Clinics; received the “Who’s Who Alumni Award” from his university, and recently became a two-time Amazon number one best-selling co-author and an international best-selling co-author.

Betsy Biern

Director

As CEO of one of the largest Make-A-Wish chapters in the nation, Betsy leads a team of 30 staff members as they design innovative and joyful wish experiences for children with life-threatening illnesses. Her fundraising experience has helped the chapter grow its annual budget to more than $10 million through philanthropic support, which is the chapter’s only source of revenue. During her tenure, Betsy has developed a strategic plan for the organization, diversified fundraising revenue streams, and focused on strengthening the organization’s governance to ensure its long-term stability. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she initiated a reemergence plan that has strengthened the organization’s financial position and reserves while also updating a strategic plan for the chapter’s programming and fundraising efforts.

CC Shaw

Student

CC Shaw is a junior boarding student at Santa Catalina School. She plays an important role in the thespian part of the Santa Catalina community. Currently, she is working on the play, Radium Girls, along with the musical, The Addams Family. CC works hard as the head of Cookie Club and is a member of ecco! and other clubs. Additionally, she is a member of the Student Health and Wellness Committee, an Admissions Ambassador, an NHS co-head, a member of the AWAKE program, and the JDRF top fundraiser.

Chris Cook

Manager

Chris Cook came to California American Water in 2015 as Assistant Engineering Manager and was promoted to Engineering Manager the following year. Since 2018, Chris has served in his current role as Director of Operations, guiding the Central Division’s operations, $30 million operating budget, union relations, and safety culture. Chris also continues to work with engineering on the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project.

Courtney Moore

Healer

Courtney Moore is an intuitive healer based in the Bay Area. After graduating from Santa Catalina in 2002, she studied philosophy of medicine at Bryn Mawr College, and then followed her intuition to take time off to study massage therapy in New Zealand. She returned to the Bay Area to get a master’s in traditional Chinese medicine; connected with a Catalina alum to study acupuncture in Taiwan; and formally honed her intuition at psychic school in Portland, OR. She currently lives in San Francisco, where she is slowly making her house a home.
