In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Gauri Varma

Student
We all have our own stories and experiences that have helped shape our cultural identity. In my talk, I hope to share mine. In my early years, facing and witnessing racism in its raw form has taught me that no one should feel embarrassed of their background. I turned the negative experiences into positive lessons and this journey of discovery has allowed me to appreciate my culture deeply. Our culture is more than just “where we come from”, it’s our value system from our upbringing that drives our everyday life. If there is one thing I have learned during my cultural disconnect and reconnect, it’s that connecting with one’s culture is one of the many ways one can connect with themself. By attaching myself to my culture, I have attached myself to my true, core being.

Subeen Shim

Student
“Belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are; it requires us to BE who we are.” A quote by Brené Brown is portrayed in Subeen Shim's story: “Starting off from feeling jealous and lonely from having a sibling as the younger one to learning about myself in an endless journey. The immaturity I held back when I was nine years old acted as the impetus for my mind to truly learn about me as an individual. Spending those precious times, I achieved a somewhat different mindset that understands my capability through picking up the violin along with a sense of belonging. I would like to call this a story instead of a simple talk. Putting a place in my life where I struggled but also where I developed and strived is quite an unforgettable experience.” Her message to the people: “Don’t be anxious that you don’t realise who you are, it takes time. Focus on the fact that you now know, clearly, what you want because it’s the chance you hold to be who you are.”
