In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Dr Aliyu Barau

Dr Aliyu Barau was born in Chedi ward in Kano City. He obtained Bachelor's, and Master’s degrees in Geography and subsequently Ph.D. in Environmental Planning. Since 2018, he has been an Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning at Bayero University Kano. He is passionate about transdisciplinary research and has been working on bridging knowledge barriers through his research works which cut across sustainability science, science advice and environmental advocacy, clean energy, urban informality, environmental history, spatial planning, transitions and transformation research, urban resilience, climate change adaptation and mitigation, decarbonization, protected ecosystems, and governance of socio-ecological systems. His passion for knowledge ideation, distillation, and production has made it possible for him to work with influential international institutions such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), International Resource Panel of the UN Environment, Association of Commonwealth Universities, UN-Habitat and Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. In 2020, the Urban Climate Change Research Network of the Columbia University New York appointed him as its Director for the West Africa hub. Dr. Barau serves as Principal Investigator and co-Investigator for various competitive international research grants worth tens of thousands of US dollars. He has published papers in many reputable journals including Nature (the world’s no.1 science journal). His book entitled Environment and Sustainable Development in the Quran was published in 2004 by IITN. He is also in the editorial team of the Third Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities (ARC3.3) 2021-2023 to be published by Cambridge University Press. Dr. Barau has presented his works at Cambridge University, University of Oxford, Stanford University, King Saud University, United Nations University (Bonn and Tokyo), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gothenburg University (Sweden), Oslo and Akerhus University (Norway), Goethe University - Frankfurt, Germany, University of Zurich, Switzerland, Saudi Institute of Public Administration, Riyadh, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing among others. Barau has traveled to all continents on the planet and has co-authors in every continent. In both Google Scholar and ResearchGate H-index and citation metrics, Barau ranks among the top 5 at Bayero University Kano. Aliyu is married with children. He likes indigenous trees, birds’ songs, desert music, and documentary films. In the course of sustainability scholarship, Aliyu is privileged to meet with leaders with a passion for the environment and these include Emperor Naruhito of Japan, Charles, the Prince of Wales, late Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz, the Saudi Crown Prince, late Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz, also Saudi Crown, and Elinor Ostrom, the 2009 Nobel Prize Winner among others.

Hafiz Yaro

Hafiz Yaro is a Medical Doctor with a specialization in Health Economics, Development Studies, and Information Management. He has over five years of progressive experience in planning and executing HIV &TB, Malaria, and Health System Strengthening programs in both humanitarian and development sectors; working closely with State Governments to improve service delivery, leadership and governance, and financing in the health sector. He currently works on the Mac Arthur Foundation ACCESS project, providing support to the Kano State Government in increasing acceptance and access to COVID-19 vaccine services. He currently serves as the Curator of the Kano Hub of the Global Shapers Community. An initiative of the World Economic Forum that consists of young individuals from all walks of life, self-organizing and collaborating to create action, dialogue, and change in their communities.

Khalifa Rabiu Tahir

Arc. Khalifa Rabiu Tahir is the CEO of Construcshop, a member of the Global shapers community (a community under the World Economic Forum). He is the Chairman of, Construction and Engineering Committee. NACCIMA Youth Entrepreneurs. He is also the Secretary-General of the NYE, and a Member of the United Nations Habitat 3. A Student Affairs officer of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, and the youngest executive member in the NIA. Once The Youngest Vice-Chair of a Political party in Kano.

Murtala Adogi

Murtala Adogi is a professionally-trained Educationist – with expertise in disruptive leadership, evidence-based governance, results delivery, strategic planning, policy reform, and system strengthening. With more than 17 years of professional experience and working with national and international non-governmental organizations in Nigeria. As a former UK Government’s Department for International Development DFID Education Adviser, Northern Nigeria Office, Kano. Murtala supported 9 Northern states (including Kano, Katsina, Bauchi, Niger, Jigawa, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi States) in strengthening the education system to deliver results. He was a former Special Assistant to Governor Umar Al-Makura, Nasarawa State on Youth Empowerment & Former State Team Leader- Reading and Numeracy Activity RANA-UNICEF-DFID Project Katsina State. Before his lateral movement to UNICEF Nigeria Country Office, Abuja – Murtala was in Akure field Office Southwest Nigeria for almost 5 years as Education Specialist supported 6 Southern (Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Edo). In Akure field office, he worked closely with top government officials in the areas of generating data and evidence for sector planning; policy design and implementation; development and reviewing of education sector plans; aligning the sector plans with states education budget for implementation of results-driven activities, conducting education budget analysis to inform plans; with focused more on upstream work, and leveraging from the State Government to replicate and scale-up workable initiatives introduced by UNICEF. He holds Doctorate Degree with Specialization in Climate Change, Livelihoods & Rural Development from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria; MSc in Ecology and Environmental Sustainability from University of Aberdeen, Scotland- United Kingdom; MA in Development Studies from Bayero University Kano; BSc. Ed in Biological Sciences Education, with Second class Upper from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He attended short courses on Youth, Education In Post Conflict Communities, University of Groningen, Netherlands; Working Ministers, Institute for Government, London; Murtala is Chevening Scholar, and he is married with 4 children

Nasiruddin Shuraim Abdulmumin

Yahaya Buhari Ali

Yahaya Buhari Ali is an entrepreneur, business development consultant, and digital marketing expert. He is the founder/CVO YBI group, Chairman YBI group foundation.
