In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

Our goal is to showcase the brilliant ideas of our University community. TEDx UNNC is bringing together bright minds to give talks that are idea-focused, to foster learning, inspiration and wonder – and to provoke conversations that matter.

The theme for our event is (Un)Changed. Our speakers will be covering topics including:

Adam Rushworth

UNNC - Faculty of Science and Engineering
Adam Rushworth is the lead inventor of the Metal Droplet Extrusion system for 3D printing. He is an assistant professor at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and teaches topics related to design and manufacturing and researches 3D printing and robotics. Adam hopes to inspire the next generation of inventors by highlighting the direction that 3D printing is headed.

Aidin Jalilzadeh

UNNC - Centre for English Language Education
Aidin Jalilzadeh obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Otago (New Zealand) in 2015. Since then he has taken two postdoctoral positions mainly in the fields of bio-mathematical and computational modelling. His research interests include population genetics, spread of invasive species and biomedical modelling such as PKPD and immune system dynamics.

David Laris

CEO David Laris Creates & CCO Youkuai Foods
David Laris is a multi-disciplined business entrepreneur who currently works with Youkuai Foods, Cachet Hotels and Boutiques, and David Laris Creates. Arriving in Shanghai in 2003, he launched his namesake restaurant Laris at Three on the Bund, which quickly became a landmark in the city's contemporary fine dining scene. He has had a rich and impactful career to date and worked in multiple cities, such as in London with Sir Terrance Conrad, in Macau with Mandarin Oriental, in Hong Kong running his own restaurant business, and in Vietnam with The Press Club. David lives by the ethos EAT. NO. EVIL and is an advocate for cruelty-free and sustainable dining. This faith also expands outside the kitchen to environment protection, charity and wellness.

Deepesh Jayasekara

UNNC - Faculty of Science and Engineering - PhD Candidate
Deepesh is a two-time Nottingham Scholar, a Doctoral Researcher in Manufacturing Engineering (Ph.D.) currently working with the Advanced EnergyandEnvironmental Materials & Technologies Research Group at the University of Nottingham (Ningbo, China) and Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing Equipment Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also has experience working with the Composite Research Group at the University of Nottingham (Ningbo, China) as part of his research study. His research interests are in the real-world utilization of digital manufacturing and accelerating digital manufacturing transformation. The key focus of his current research is on cloud manufacturing and assessing the readiness of the aerospace composite manufacturing industry in China for cloud manufacturing.

Dr Dongdong Xia

Ningbo First Hospital, Orthopedic Physician & Postdoctoral of Harvard Medical School
Lecturer of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) in China and director of FLS program of International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). Young member of Zhejiang Society of Osteoporosis and Bone Mineral Research, expert committee member of Ningbo Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Clinical Guidance Center, young member of Ningbo Orthopedic Association. Dr. Xia Dongdong has been engaged in the research of spinal diseases for a long time, committed to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and related diseases in the elderly. To date, he has obtained eight national invention patents, published more than 10 SCI papers on international journals, presided over and participated in a number of international, national and provincial scientific research projects.

Nina Kong

Strategy Director, Media.Monks China
Nina Kong is a branding and marketing strategist who is building her career around injecting personal value propositions into strategies for consumer brands. She believes there is always an opportunity to align commercial objectives with personal ideals. Currently Strategy Director at MediaMonks China, Nina is part of WoMMen in Tech, a global community of MediaMonks staff who have come togetherto raise awareness around the different ways individuals experience situations atwork, with empathy as the core rallying cry. Since 2019, Nina has been the ChiFan for Charity Shanghai Director, a volunteer-runcommunity platform supporting local charities and non-profits through social events. She is also co-founder of South Bund, a made-to-order suit business centered on women, built on the belief that there should be a suit for every individual - not one from their fathers or mothers, and certainly not just for the boardroom.

One of the most extraordinary undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at UNNC. An active media user and observer who is trying hard to find a delicate balance between laying flat and involution.

Saulo Melo

China Fitness Director, UFC FIT
Saulo is the Fitness Director of UFC FIT's Flagship in Shanghai, PRC and the Head Coach of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program. He oversees all fitness and combat sports programs as well as coaches' training and development. His expertise is grounded in the black belts he holds in both Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (“BJJ”) under the Brazilian Judo Federation and the world-renowned Ribeiro Brothers respectively. Saulo has a rich and unique entrepreneurial and professional background in the arena of combat sports. He has been an important and influential force in developing the industry and community in Shanghai for many years. As an entrepreneur, Saulo was also the founder of Bushido Brazilian Jiujitsu as well as other combat gyms in Shanghai.

Shanker Dutt Bhatt

UNNC - Business Development Office
Mr Bhatt has over 25 years of teaching and leadership experience, and has been instrumental in the development of internationalised education in China for almost two decades. Currently, he works with the teacher training team at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China, designing and delivering training and consultancy programmes to teachers and educational leaders. His research interests include Educational Leadership, Building Sustainable Schools, Self-seeking, Fear and Creativity. When time permits - and it always permits - he likes to be close to the existence in the form of children and nature, loves reading about existentialism, writes poems and plays badminton. His educational philosophy is much influenced by J. Krishnamurti, which revolves around the true meaning of educating the child for facing oneself and the world as it is, rather what it should be!

Thomas Piachaud

Head of Strategy, Re-Hub
Thomas Piachaud works on crafting business impact using the latest in artificial intelligence and big data solutions in China. With a primary focus on the luxury industry, he has worked with some of the biggest luxury brands in the world to implement new processes, introduce new tools, create new ways of working and shift cultures for companies to unlock the power of data centricity. With a strong combination of skills born from both marketing and branding consulting for six years in Shanghai, experience in teaching in one of the top universities in China, as well as an academic background in physics from his PhD at the University of Cambridge in the UK, Thomas finds meaning in taking complex ideas and making them simple and actionable at a business level. Outside of the office, Thomas will often be found walking his husky, or on the mats of his local dojo where he is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He makes a mean chiliconcarne, and will solve rubix cubes for therapeutic purposes.

William Widjaja

UNNC - Faculty of Science and Engineering - Undergraduate Student
My name is William Widjaja, and my idea is about improving the performance of aircraft technology by changing the wingtip angle as inspired by eagle wings. This project will utilize both computational and experimental methodology to validate each other values. I also want to share that even though I am not good at math, a couple of times underestimated and mocked by others, perseverance will eventually lead to something that even I have never imagined before.

Xi Chen

UNNC - Faculty of Business
Xi Chen is an assistant professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at Nottingham University Business China. Her research explores how the macro and micro phenomena interact and influence each other. On the one hand, she studies how institutional transition influences individual identity and behaviors. On the other hand, she studies how individual motivation can have far-reaching impact on organizational and social outcomes. Her research has won the Best Paper Award of Canadian Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (CCSBE), Best Paper Award in Women Entrepreneurship of CCSBE, and Finalist for Kauffman Best Paper Awards in Entrepreneurial Cognition.

Yoong Xin Pang

UNNC - Faculty of Science and Engineering - PhD Candidate
Meet Eunice Yoong Xin Pang, a science and engineering researcher-to-be. Born in Malaysia, driven by her interest in ancient Chinese culture, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery in this country that holds one of the oldest civilizations and enjoying her fourth year studying in China. While indulging in her interest, her studies revolve around sustainable processing and renewable materials. She believes engineers are voyagers and explorers that find wonders in daily life. Eunice is excited to share the amusement in her engineering chapters with more people around her and aims to communicate with the world through ideas exchange.
