Theme: Turn the Tide

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alan O'Sullivan

In January 2020, Cormac Harris and Alan O’Sullivan took home the top prize in the BT Young Scientist and Technologist Exhibition with their project titled: “A statistical investigation into the prevalence of gender stereotyping in 5-7 year olds and the development of an initiative to combat gender bias”. Following this success, Cormac and Alan represented Ireland in the virtual European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) 2020, competing against 39 countries across Europe and the world, where they also secured the first prize. Since winning BTYSTE/ EUCYS, Alan and Cormac have continued to develop their project with a particular focus on raising awareness of this very important topic in different sectors. They have taken part in numerous interviews on TV, radio and newspapers, spoke at the Irish Citizens Assembly on Gender Equality as well as making presentations at third level institutes such as UCC and MTU. They also took part in Accenture’s Celebration of International Women’s Day, the Work Equal Campaign and Future Human 2020. In addition, they visited numerous industries in the field of Technology and Pharmaceutical. In addition with adding to the narrative surrounding gender stereotyping, Cormac and Alan have utilised the data they had previously collated and conducted further statistical analysis, investigating the impact of attending co-educational or single sex schools on the prevalence of gender stereotyping. They also aim to gather further resources online which can be used by teachers and parents to help combat gender stereotyping.

Emer O'Neill

Emer O’Neill is a mother of two Kyan 6 and Sunny Rae is nearly 2. She was born and raised in Ireland and is Irish/Nigerian and a Bray Co. Wicklow native. Emer is a huge advocate for promoting positive body image. She is the ambassador for a programme called Free Being Me which is a programme with the Irish Girl Guides to encourage children to love their body and the skin they are in. Emer is an anti racism activist and hopes to bring awareness to the lack of diversity in the media, state jobs, positions of leadership and in our education system here in Ireland. She is an ambassador for the Olympic Federation Ireland “Don’t Scroll By” campaign. Emer is honoured to have helped write the Anti Racism CPD professional development course with the Irish National Teachers Organisation which aims to encourage teachers to reflect on their unconscious bias and knowledge on anti racism.

Eoin Ryan

Eoin Ryan the Energy Coach is originally from Castlebridge but having spent most of his life in Dublin is now a self-proclaimed D’ulchie! He is the founder of the Wexford Triathlon club and the Wexford half marathon and 10km. Eoin is no stranger to endurance sports himself having completed the Marathon des Sables, the world's toughest race.

Trina Cleary

I'm a Mam, a sister, a daughter, a partner, a friend, a survivor, a fighter and an advocate for all things body health, awareness & love. After being diagnosed at 33 with breast cancer, over coming this and all the changes mentally & physically that go with that journey to be diagnosed with stage 4, incurable not even a year into my remission it really opens your eyes to what's important.

Val Mullally

Val Mullally MA is an author, trainer, and international keynote speaker, whose passion is to help parents and educators to create environments for children to thrive. Val’s first career in Southern Africa was in education, as a teacher, school principal and an early education trainer. Val moved with her husband to Ireland in 2000 and now works as a Professional Coach and Reflective Practice Facilitator to support parents and practitioners to nurture children’s psychological well-being, so that every child has the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential. Her focus is on listening to understand and to deepen relationships - integrating insights from emotional intelligence and neuroscience, she is currently investigating how we can better support children with sensory sensitivity. Val is founder of Koemba Parenting and has published several books and online courses.
