From a question “How can I be happy?” I chose this topic ‘Love Yourself.’ Starting to ask about happiness to myself, I have tried to find ways to be happy. In this process, I learned that ‘Love Myself’ is a basic step to knowing how to feel happy. I still try to know and love myself. And I hope others to do so.

제주외고에 재학 중인 현예지입니다. 역사, 사회, 국제 문제등 관심사가 너무 많기 때문에 청중들에게 어떤 주제를 발표하면 좋을까? 라는 고민을 해왔습니다. 그러던 중, 과거의 제 경험을 떠올려 보았습니다. 저는 겉으로 듣는 평과 다르게 마음이 타인의 사소한 말 하나하나에 얽매였던 사람이었습니다. 머리가 짧았던 시절, 사람들이 무심코 던진 한 마디에 상처받았던 적도 있었지요. 그 순간 ‘고정관념 섞인 말 한 마디, 한 마디가 나에게 어떻게 다가왔지?’라는 고민이 머릿속에 떠올랐습니다. 저는 이 질문에 대한 해답을 찾아가는 과정에서 ‘당신은 얼마나 예민하십니까?’라는 이번 주제를 정할 수 있었습니다. 우리는 살아가면서 많은 언어들을 접해옵니다. 긍정적인 표현도, 부정적인 표현, 특히 미세한 성 차별적인 말들도 우리가 접해오는 표현들 중 하나이지요. 미세한 크기와 다르게 언어를 통해 쌓여온 편견과 고정관념은 개인을 힘들게 하고, 나아가 사회의 가능성을 저해시킵니다. 저는 이번 발표를 통해 여러분들이 이런 미세한 성 차별을 인지해주셨으면 좋겠습니다. 우리들의 다양하고 무궁무진한 가능성이 고작 작은 고정관념에 얽매이는 것은 너무나도 안타까운 일이니까요!
