This event occurred on
June 6, 2020
Mbabane, Hhohho
Swaziland

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Banele Nkambule

Donor Relations Manager
My name is Banele Nkambule. My life’s mission is to remove worry from people and replace it with a smile. The way I intend to do that is to dedicate myself to fully understanding the aspects that are hindering the excellence of the African diaspora because I believe that the world will always be at a disadvantage as long Africans are disenfranchised, especially intellectually. I studied economics at Colorado College in the US. I am currently the Donor Relations Manager for Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA, a college that not only believes in developing leaders of impact for Africa, as well as other global communities. Waterford Kamhlaba also stands against the disenfranchisement of groups based on socio-economic status, race, religion, etc. I was inspired to do a TEDxUWCSA talk that tackled the financial scripts that are dominant in the African continent and are impeding financial liberation.

Jasmine Ongole

Student
I am Jasmine Akello Ongole, I am a proud Ugandan, who grew up in Swaziland. As a shy young girl I became intrigued by make up, soon it became my pathway to self expression. From watching YouTube videos and Instagram tutorials I developed skills my skills that has allowed me to do my own and others make up. I consider my self a self taught make up artist. However the heavily Eurocentric make up industry, made me feel like an outcast. I am Make up fanatic who is inspired my make up Gurus such as Jackie Aina and Nyma Tang. I aim to one day become a powerhouse in the industry, to educate the world on the negative side of a heavily exclusive industry and one day create a cultural change

Khanya Mnisi

Student
My name is Khanya Philip Mnisi and I am 18 years old. Looking back on my formative years, I would have never imagined myself participating in such an endeavor as the TedX speaker series. I chose to take part in the TedX program to also develop my speaking proficiency as well as improving on my writing and communication skills. My talk entitled “What An Atheist Taught Me About Belief,” was inspired by a true event in my own life in which a school peer and myself got into a debate over the existence of God. I chose to talk on this topic as my way of grappling with the search for truth and understanding pertaining to my Christian faith. I looked deeply into the need for us as mankind to develop the practice of learning and understanding one another’s belief systems and cultivate the practice of respect and love even where we have a multitude of conflicting opinions.

Sabusiswa Nxumalo

Student
I like debate: I learn new things and broaden my perspectives. I recently started watching crime series and now I'm obsessed, it's weird😅 I like sport, but mire especially football, I like creative things, so like art and music, etc. I'm interested in problem-solving I think and the continent, I think it breaks my heart that stuff is still kind of bad for the continent, so I really like reading up on things like the AUs agenda, etc.. And again problem solve My hobbies, school is a hobby 😂 kidding, but hey... I read. I write mostly poetry and short stories. I do play sport but not a lot and I sing.

Victor Agaba

Student
My name is Victor Agaba and I am an 18-year-old Ugandan. My interests include Maths, physics, philosophy, football.I love generating ideas and making them communicable in any way I can, partly through speech and writing. I see my future self writing a philosophical book that explores the maths of engineering. While it's not the only book I hope to write, or the only way I plan to apply engineering in my career, this vision is my most direct way to express my seemingly disparate passions: maths, science, philosophy and writing. I'm primarily invested in sciences which I want to take up to the highest professional level I can, but my UWC experience opened my mind to epistemological (philosophical) thinking which consolidates different aspects of knowledge through a variety of perspectives, and I find that really interesting. I also took up writing because I ultimately want to share the ideas I get with the world, hopefully inspiring a person or two along the way, much like my Ted Talk.
