Today's Brea Olinda High School students have grown up in a world of constant progress and advancement; with this fast-paced culture, there is a need for the youth to foster an innovative mindset as well as an ability to view issues creatively. Technology has become a fundamental part of life as entertainment, health, business, and education continue to grow and modernize.

TEDxBOHS explores what students have to say about this innovative culture and shows how individual students uniquely interpret the topic.

Abigail Cerna

Student Speaker
Abigail Cerna is currently a freshman at Brea Olinda High School, enrolled in all honors classes and an ROP Medical Careers class. Whenever she is outside of class, you can find her playing soccer or sprinting on the track. She is actively engaged on and off campus, being in multiple community service clubs in which she volunteers for. When not in school or sports, you can find Abigail playing the piano, serving on her church leadership team, reading a book, spending time with family and friends, or listening to music. Ever since she was young, Abigail has had an interest in the medical field, and taking a medical class has only piqued her interests. She is especially excited to give this speech to share some knowledge about what goes on behind the scenes of worldwide epidemics and how rapidly the world of healthcare progresses as new problems arise every day.

Christian James Quion

Student Speaker
C.J. Quion is a senior currently enrolled at Brea Olinda High School. He’s struggled with severe-profound hearing loss since birth and has coped with it by using humor, hence the name of his TED talk. When he’s not cracking jokes in school, he’s somehow getting by in four AP classes or playing his trumpet in the school’s band. At home, C.J. is fond of sketching character concepts, writing stories, and building strong relationships with his friends and family. His passion for history motivates him to explore the subject and learn new events in humanity’s stories, such as the Christmas Truce of 1914 and the humorous quips of historical figures such as Winston Churchill. C.J. also taught Chinese history in his sophomore year and also hopes to be able to teach history in the future.

Colin Francois

Student Speaker
Colin Francois is a fourteen year old freshman at Brea Olinda High School. He is currently enrolled in advanced courses and in his second year of his schools B.I.T.A. program (Building Industry Technology Academy). He is involved in cross country and runs distance in track and field. Outside of his academics, Colin enjoys spending time volunteering at his church and hanging out with his youth group. On the weekends he can typically be found at the movies, out in nature, or other engaging in various physical activities. When he is on the internet at home he often will often watch history related videos and documentaries. While like many teenagers he hasn’t quite decided what career he wants to pursue, he is dedicated to getting the grades that will allow him to pursue the path he eventually chooses for himself.

Jack May

Student Speaker
Jack May is a freshman currently attending Brea Olinda High School. When he's not in class, he can be found next door, in the pool, honing his water polo skills. In school, his favorite subjects include Spanish and Math. He loves spending time with friends and family, listening to music, and gaining new knowledge. In his future, he hopes to be able to explore his interests and continue to learn new things.

JohnPaul Simental

Student Speaker
JohnPaul (JP) Simental is a junior at Brea Olinda High School. He plays clarinet in the school’s marching band and wind ensemble, plays tenor saxophone in the school’s jazz band, and is trying to learn piano. He is on the Academic Decathlon team, has a black belt in tae kwon do, and enjoys playing music and video games, which have both inspired him greatly. He doesn’t know what he wants to do as an adult, but something in music, science, or computer science all sound like good options to him.

Lance Tsai

Student Speaker
Lance is currently attending Brea Olinda High School as a freshman. His passions include basketball, animals, and history. In school, Lance likes to hang out with his friends and draw. Outside school, when he’s not found practicing his basketball skills, eating, or doing homework, he usually likes to watch movies and play with his dog. In the future, he hopes to enter college as a collegiate athlete one day. His newfound interest in investing and managing led him to a dream of one day having an occupation as an investor.

Lauren Yu

Student Speaker
Lauren Yu is a sophomore at Brea Olinda High School; as a student passionate about the intersection of business and STEM, she is a cofounder of several startups based on using technology to solve modern issues, including Munch (an Orange County SMS flash-promotion service) and WithMe (a sexual assault prevention app). Additionally, outside of school, she enjoys using public speaking and art as avenues to express her ideas. After competing in and teaching speech and debate in the past, she hopes to continue spreading her love for communication through TEDxBOHS and further endeavors.

Owen Siglin

Student Speaker
Owen Siglin is a junior at Brea Olinda High School. Currently, he is taking a variety of AP courses, as well as Japanese, computer science, and graphic design. Since sixth grade, he has volunteered at the Yorba Linda Public Library, performing puppet shows and storytimes for children ages 4 and up. In school, he is a part of the National Honors Society, Link Crew, and graphics club. He is still unsure of what his future career holds, but it will most likely involve mathematics or technology in some capacity; he’s loved math for his entire life, and it's his best subject.

Shulin Raja
