In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Deanna Behnke-Cook

Professor
Dr. Deanna Behnke-Cook is a professor at the University of Guelph within the department of Sociology and Anthropology. She is a motivational speaker and educator who is passionate about inspiring young people to grow their resiliency and live their most authentic lives. In her talk, she will be speaking about Antifragility and the Culture of Safetyism and how that has impacted the mental health and wellbeing of young people.

Jibran Khokhar

Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Guelph
Dr. Jibran Khokhar is a professor within the department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Guelph. Dr. Khokhar’s research aims to understand the mechanisms underlying co-occurring schizophrenia and substance use disorders, using a variety of behavioural, pharmacological and translational neuroimaging techniques. In his talk, he will be discussing the long-term effects of adolescent drug use, such as cannabis and vaping, and how these effects might contribute to the risk for serious mental illness and addiction.

Matt McCoy

As a student at the University of Guelph, Matt McCoy appeared on Dragon’s Den with his barbeque cleaning business idea called Canadian Barbeque Boys. This idea landed a deal on the show. Matt Mccoy will be discussing the value of starting a business while in university for personal and professional development.

Melissa Perreault

Assistant Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph
Dr. Melissa Perreault is a professor at the University of Guelph within the department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Melissa’s current primary research has a specific interest in understanding the mechanistic processes underlying the cognitive impairments that are associated with depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Perreault is a citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario and serves on various institutional and non-institutional committees to promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. In her talk, Melissa will be exploring sex and gender differences that are commonly found in mental health research.

Robyne Hanley-Dafoe

Dr. Robyne Hanley-DaFoe is an educator, speaker, and author with over 13 years of teaching and research experience at Trent University. Robyne’s work has come from real conversations with students, leaders, educators, and families from all walks of life, and self-describes her work as “raw but real”. In her talk, she will explore the concept of resiliency from a broad worldview that incorporates five key areas.
