Our Salon is a PUB-like Drop-in event with discussion about a selected theme after an introduction and normally replay of TED Talk(s) with related contents. Introduction and chairing the discussion this time by Emeila Strid, She has an interdisciplinary education with sociology, philosophy and (mainly) psychology from Linköping University and is currently i
a third year PhD student at Child Studies.
She has always been fascinated by strong emotions and how they are used in interaction. In her introducction she will focus on how preschool children express joyful emotions. What does children do when they express excitement or laughter in their interaction with other children? She will explore how children use these joyful emotional expressions ; laughter and excitement in their everyday peer play interactions. Her PhD dissertation focuses on study how talk, gaze, gestures and posture are coordinated in situations where laughter and excitement occur. These are all mundane activities seemingly just happen as part of everyday life. However, looking closer at how children organize and combine their expressions it is possible to see how the actions are in fact neatly organized to share a mutual understanding and/or feeling. By studying detailed videos of how children initiate, sustain and recruit peers in play practices we can learn something about the normative way emotions are expressed. Learning how to express emotion in an adequate way is part of becoming a member of the peer group and society at large. Learning how to express emotion is therefore an important skill to master.
