Theme: The Time is Now

The time is now to embrace ideas worth spreading. William and Mary’s 2020 TEDx event features seven TED-style talks that will inspire audiences and demonstrate that there is no time like the present to make a difference.

The event will take place in Commonwealth Auditorium in the Sadler Center. Doors open at 5:30pm, and the event will start at 6:30pm.

There will be a public reception in Tidewater A/B following the event.

George Greenia

W&M Professor Emeritus

George Greenia is co-founder of the W&M Program in Medieval & Renaissance Studies, and founder of the Institute for Pilgrimage Studies. He is a past national officer of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, founded at W&M in 1776. Fluent in Spanish, French and Latin, he is an authority on medieval material culture, religious traditions, medieval travel and art. For 14 years he served as editor and publisher of La corónica, a research journal of medieval Spanish language, literature and cultural studies. In 2007 he was name Distinguished Editor by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. An internationally recognized authority on medieval and modern pilgrimage, he has bicycled and walked over 4000 miles along the pilgrimage trails to Santiago de Compostela. For his work promoting Spanish culture, he was knighted by order of King Juan Carlos I and bestowed an Encomienda of the Order of Isabel the Catholic. In 2019 he was awarded the Compos­tela Prize for preservation of European culture.

Krista Schroth

Krista is a second-year master's student in the School of Education and has a Graduate Assistantship in Student Engagement and Leadership. Before coming to W&M she worked in DC for several charter schools in an assortment of administrative positions. Prior to moving to DC she served as a High School science teacher in Eastern North Carolina through Teach For America. Krista has a B.S. in Human Sciences and a B.S. in Psychology. Outside of school, Krista is currently a Court Appointed Special Advocate and also volunteers by giving Mental Health and Suicide Prevention trainings all throughout Hampton Roads. Krista loves the outdoors, crafting and professional development. She is a certified fitness instructor and deeply values wellness; emotionally, spiritually and physically! She loves spending time with her partner and their amazing dog Barry!

Mariha Junaid

Mariha Junaid is a junior at the College, majoring in Kinesiology and Health Sciences with a concentration in public health. She hopes to pursue a career in medicine after graduation. Outside of academics, Mariha is on the executive board of the Muslim Student Association, and is also involved with the Asian American Student Initiative, South Asian Student Association, and the Debate Society. Mariha is the proud cat mom to a 9-year old rescue named Wolfgang.

Matthew Boyer is a student of the College of William and Mary. Growing up, he moved 11 times, with stints in Italy, Egypt, and Kenya. He attributes, his personality to his large family and his unique upbringing and is passionate about openly engaging the systems in which he lives.

With twenty years of teaching courses in public speaking, entertainment education, small group, nonverbal, and intercultural communication Dr. Michele Bates King's passion is meeting students where they are and guiding them into the best versions of themselves. She Facilitating workshops for ALI fellows from the Mandela Washington flagship program of Young African Leaders Initiative to STEM middle school students from all socioeconomic backgrounds to the Business School, Entrepreneurship Center, and School of Education to the Graduate Center, Data Science, and the Reves Center for International Studies – Michele King engages with people at all levels on many topics. A ludologist, advocate for esports, and active member of IBGSA, King has more to offer than her teaching. For more than a decade, Dr. King has traveled the world to present her research on play, games, and gamification. Her favorite games include CodeNames, TriBond, Sagrada, Abalone, and Splendor.
