Seven student speakers from South Pasadena High School provide talks focused on the theme of, ¨Wish it. Dream it. Do it.¨ TEDxSouthPasadenaHigh will include live student speakers as well as ted.com video talks that address the theme of ideas that become reality. Light refreshments will be provided.

Emily Newhall

Student Speaker
Emily Newhall has lived in South Pasadena her entire life. Emily plays basketball, is a TASSEL teacher, and is currently in Girl Scouts. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family.In her talk Emily addresses the beauty standards that shape our community. She also talks about herself and her experiences in the subject. Emily provides a refreshing perspective on the issue of body image.

Ian Wang

Student Speaker
Ian Wang is a runner, a jazz pianist, a board games enthusiast, and a big lover of the outdoors. In addition, he serves as the Commissioner of Clubs at South Pasadena HS, volunteers for Huntington Hospital on the weekends, and is approaching the rank of Eagle as a Boy Scout. In his talk, he reflects on his time as an active high school student and explains how a busier schedule isn’t always better. Trust him. He would know.

Jessica Lat

Student Speaker
Jessica Lat is an ambitious student at South Pasadena High School with an interest in pursuing a career in business and engineering. Fueled by her interests, Jessica actively volunteers as a “STEM Principles of Engineering” teacher at Marengo Elementary and has taught elementary and middle schoolers the basics of coding over summer. She partakes in the DIY Club, Hands Together Club, and Femineers at SPHS, sustaining the role as treasurer, vice president, and member. Jessica is involved in Varsity Virtual Business at South Pasadena as the ARCH Vice President of Sales. She has won numerous awards for her proficiency in soccer and swim including CIF and Rio Hondo League Champions. Jessica’s Destination Imagination team used their problem solving skills and elements of STEM & fine arts to create a theatrical performance that led them to victory as region and state champions, as well as global finalists. Jessica strives to inspire others through her Ted Talk of perseverance and courage.

Liam Markus

Student Speaker
Liam Markus is a high school student from SPHS. He’s on the Varsity Water Polo team as well as on the Junior Olympics team. Throughout all the practices and games, he’s had to juggle his homework and studying for the MCAT, all to reach his goal of becoming a trauma surgeon. He’s worked and watched through numerous operations in the medical field and wants to share his encounters and inspire through TedxSouthPasadenaHigh.

Mia Jung

Student Speaker
Mia Jung is a senior at South Pasadena High School. She has a wide spectrum of interests which includes performing with her music club for senior citizens and hospitalized patients at her community. Mia is the vice president of a Christian organization at SPHS and the president of a small children’s charity. In her Ted Talk, she focuses on the importance of kindness and emphasizes the positive impacts of words and acts of kindness on others. Mia also urges others to practice self-compassion because she feels everyone deserves more happiness in their lives.

Sam Clark

Student Speaker
Sam Clark is a senior at South Pasadena High School with a variety of interests. He is president of the Math, Science, and Board Game clubs, and is the captain of the Cross Country team. He also has an immense love of language and vocabulary, although he only speaks English, Java, sarcasm, Pig Latin, and a little bit of Spanish. In his TedTalk speech, he emphasizes the importance of language and how it evolves over time to express our individual stories.

Simon Pierce

Student Speaker
Simon Pierce is a seventeen-year-old senior at South Pasadena High School. He is a Youth Legislator, Senior Patrol Leader of BSA Troop 342, and the leader of Boys SPASM in Youth and Government. He has performed in many spring and winter dance concerts, in addition to fall marching band shows with color guard and winter guard shows.
