Theme: The Age Of ISMs with Ashton Applewhite

This event occurred on
November 10, 2019
Melbourne, Victoria
Australia

You probably do it without even noticing. Every day we say things, ageist things, that undermine our ability to thrive. Things like “I can’t find my car keys, I must be getting old” or “Millennials have a poor work ethic” without a second thought.

Ageism, like sexism and racism, is no longer acceptable. Let's deep dive our thoughts and behaviours and see where we've "self talked" ourselves into bias. Unless we challenge the status quo, it will remain.

This begins the first of many conversations to discuss negative ISMs and to make things right. Join TEDxMelbourne as we explore, discuss and debate ageism in our community.

Join us as we dissect the notion of ageism with acclaimed TED speaker, author and activist Ashton Applewhite, in her only public Melbourne event.

Learn how to overcome the unconscious bias of ageism as Ashton challenges the cultural norm of our youth obsessed culture. Connect for an afternoon of ideas worth spreading with TEDxMelbourne and Ashton Applewhite in this intimate salon event.

Ashton Applewhite

Activist
Ashton Applewhite would like us to think differently about growing older. As she writes: "Aging is a natural, lifelong, powerful process that unites us all. So how come so many of us unthinkingly assume that depression, diapers, and dementia lie ahead? Because of ageism -- the last socially sanctioned prejudice." She's the author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism and is the voice of the Yo, Is This Ageist? blog. She is also the author of Cutting Loose: Why Women Who End Their Marriages Do So Well -- and was a clue on Jeopardy! as the author of the mega bestseller series, Truly Tasteless Jokes. (Who is Blanche Knott?)
