Theme: Beyond Limits

“The sky’s the limit” is a universally acclaimed principle that drives us to reach a lofty goal. While it often goes without saying, what does it tell us, actually?

One thing that matters as we know it is human progress. In our previous event, TEDxUniversitasPrasetiyaMulyaJakarta #1: Forward, we highlighted the beauty of letting go, of seeing the unseen, and of pushing the boundaries in order to pursue our calling. And we realize we cannot just stop there. In university we are taught to believe there is an infinite amount of knowledge that leads us to discover, contemplate and self-reflect. So is the sky really the limit?

TEDxUniversitasPrasetiyaMulyaJakarta #2: Beyond Limits intends to nurture us learners by bringing back the spirit of moving forward and creating a moment where we will meet leaders, artists, innovators, change makers, entrepreneurs who have questioned their own limits, and will make us question ours.

Hadi Sadikin Rachmat

“Tired but contented” is Kang Hadi’s personal jargon. He juggles 7 days a week between office duties and art projects. Kang Hadi is founder of Bandung Dance Collective and body movement coach of Gita Pakuan Marching Band. Still, he’s in a state of bliss to live life on his own definitions.

Iga Massardi

“My days are filled with flying ideas.” These ideas fuel his musical creativity. A guitarist and vocalist of Barasuara, Iga is currently working on a music documentary project called Selat.ID, which aims to connect works and talents from small regions in Indonesia, and to document chronicles of music from musicians across the country. Does music know any limit?

Margaretha Quina

Quina believes in the power of law as a social engineering instrument to protect Mother Earth. This has led her to build a career as an environmental lawyer and consultant. She has immersed herself actively in many society’s environmental initiatives to drive the establishment of rules that protect health and environment from pollution, as well as guiding NGOs in handling such cases. How does Quina interpret our participation in upholding environmental regulations in Indonesia?

Max Mandias

Shortly after graduating from high school, Max moved to Amsterdam to continue education and worked as a data analyst. He clutched to routines but demotivation got the better of him and he slowly drifted into depression. After a few months of trying to stay alive and seeking a way out, he resolved to changing his diet into 100% vegetarian. His condition improved without any meds or doctor visitations.

Nadya Christina

“Be an example. Start from yourself and together we do good things to our environment” is one of Nadya’s principles to live by. She personally learned this wisdom two years ago, through her internship at an environmental NGO, where she joined the zero-waste-to-ocean project and found out, to her own dismay, that she had also been a waste contributor.

Naufal Abshar

Taking up an art major or working as an artist is often underestimated by society, just because it seems to have no future. Countless mockeries, endless questions, even doubts have been brought to Naufal’s face. Yet, he perseveres dearly to his painting talents. Today, his artwork HAHA series, which reconstruct laughter and humor as social criticism, have been showcased in many parts of the world. Currently Naufal is also running a charity project: drawing workshop series for refugees and blind kids.

Reggy Hasibuan

Since 2009 Reggy Hasibuan has been the only stand-up comedian in Indonesia who uses English as his medium. He teaches us a valuable lesson about consistency in the pursuit of passion. He let go of an established career and decided to chase his dream in comedy. How did it turn out? Well, he encountered failures and loss. To Reggy, a true comedian is one who has hit rock bottom yet can still laugh about it.

Sisyelin Bawekes

Elin started her career as a Biology teacher at SMA Unggul Del. She passed on the spirit to her students through research projects on simple things surrounding them. In 2016, Elin had an opportunity to become one of the two mentors to guide 10 SMA Unggul Del students to create a microlab, a robotic system of research in the International Space Station, NASA, and applied fermentation in microgravity environment.
