Theme: Isms Cause Schisms

This event occurred on
April 12, 2019
The Hague, Zuid-Holland
Netherlands

You are cordially invited to the next TEDxTheHague salon! Our April edition — themed Isms Cause Schisms — is curated by TEDxTheHague:

"Dogmatism, perfectionism, sensationalism... isms have the power to take over our lives — if we let them. But what’s behind these isms? Sometimes it’s a role we play, a mask we wear, to get the approval we crave for. But it can also be a stereotype that is automatic, unintentional, and deeply ingrained in us — and the things we make."

We'll explore this theme by watching and discussing the following videos:

Joy Buolamwini: How I'm fighting bias in algorithms
MIT grad student Joy Buolamwini was working with facial analysis software when she noticed a problem: the software didn't detect her face — because the algorithm was only taught to identify white people. Now she's on a mission to fight bias in machine learning, as algorithms take over more and more aspects of our lives.

Thomas Curran: Our dangerous obsession with perfectionism is getting worse
Social psychologist Thomas Curran explores how the pressure to be perfect — in our social media feeds, in school, at work — is driving a rise in mental illness, especially among young people. Learn more about the causes of this phenomenon and how we can create a culture that celebrates the joys of imperfection.

Ashton Applewhite: Let's end ageism
It's not the passage of time that makes it so hard to get older. It's ageism, a prejudice that pits us against our future selves — and each other. Ashton Applewhite urges us to dismantle the dread and mobilize against the last socially acceptable prejudice. "Aging is not a problem to be fixed or a disease to be cured," she says. "It is a natural, powerful, lifelong process that unites us all."

RSVP if you want to attend
We hope this theme will resonate with you, awaken your curiosity and make you decide to attend TEDxTheHague. To stimulate conversation, we admit up to 25 guests. If you want to be put on our final guest list, please RSVP. First-come, first-served!

We look forward to a stimulating evening filled with spirited conversation and new discoveries.
