In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Amira Sims

Spoken Word Poet
Amira Sims is a mother of four, a college professor, and a spoken word artist. She has been on the frontline teaching, uplifting, and helping students find their niche. Amira earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Valdosta State University (VSU). She is currently a doctoral student at Capella University. Her motto and self-proclaimed tag line “learning is my thing” neatly sums up many of her interests and her inspiration. Amira’s spoken word career began at VSU when one of her professors inquired if she shared her poems with others. This nudge led to her helping to start Poetic Magic. For Amira, poetry is an effort to bring forth the fruits of her thoughts. Initially, she took the stage name Mi (pronounced -me) because she said she is sharing a piece of herself with the audience when she shares a poem. Nowadays she usually just goes by her first name when she has the pleasure to speak.

It was there that she cultivated her understanding of how children learn languages and its connection to their cognitive development. When Caryn had her own child and wanted to teach him foreign languages at a young age, she found nothing on the market that put into practice what she had learned. That inspired Caryn to embark on developing a comprehensive program, the end result being the award-winning, innovative Early Lingo Learning System.

Deborah Grassman

Founder of Opus Peace
Few people have been with 10,000 dying veterans; five VA hospice nurses have. What these nurses witnessed is providing lessons for the rest of the world. The lessons are about how to attain personal peace, and ironically, these lessons have come from people who were trained for war and from people who were dying. The nurses discovered a phenomenon that has become identified as “Soul Injury®.” Led by Deborah Grassman, the five nurses left the VA to start Opus Peace, a non-profit organization with a mission of taking the Soul Injury® message to people who are not veterans and to people who are not dying. These pioneering nurses now provide educational materials and self- help tools to help people learn how to self-compassionately connect with the part of self-holding their pain and shame, allowing people to re-connect with their soul – with who they really are.
