In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alexander Reissner

Alexander is the founder and CEO of ENPULSION, an Austrian company developing innovative state-of-the-art solutions in the area of electric propulsion – a key component in making the satellite network revolution possible.

Andreas Arnold

Andreas Arnold is doing his Ph.D. at TU Wien at Institute of Applied Physics in the Biophysics research group. As part of his research, the group uses super-resolution microscopy to study the dynamics and distribution of proteins in the plasma membrane of a biological cell. During his studies, he learned that scientific truth at a given point of time can be amazingly precise and closer to reality in some details while being rather crude and incorrect in others. In his talk at TEDxTUWien, we will be introduced to face the fact that something known to be true turned out to be false after all.

Ape Connection

Stunts, acrobatics and all kinds of crazy moves around Parkour and Freerunning - that is what Ape Connection stands for. A group of trainers, professionals, sports scientist, and event managers, all sports enthusiasts, that share and express their great passion for movements in movies, theaters, shows, and even advertisements. Ape Connection has gained experience and developed their skills as a group within this energetic field of sports for the past ten years. As they are very eager to share their knowledge and passion, they started teaching at the Vienna Sports university and soon built the ‘Ape Academy’ – Ape Connections unique training facility, specially made for Parkour and Freerunning.

Christian Schimper

After his master studies of Biotechnology and Food Technology in Vienna, Christian Schimper focused on cellulose and textile chemistry. Under the guidance of Prof. Bechtold at the University of Innsbruck he developed a method for environmentally friendly bleaching of Jeans. Based on these results he formed a team and founded the spin-off “Acticell GmbH” in 2014. Acticell is mainly emphasizing on developing and optimizing chemical processes for the sustainable and non-toxic surface treatment of cellulose materials – as bleaching and dying of jeans materials. In 2017 Acticell was awarded the 1st place “Gewinn-Junior Entrepreneurs Competitions” in the category environment, where they gained 3rd place in the overall category as well. Beside multiple granted FFG traineeship awards, Acticell also won the 2nd price in the „PlanB start-up competition” in Straubing, Germany in 2019.

Gernot Müller-Putz

Prof. Dr. Gernot Müller-Putz heads the Institute of Neural Engineering and its associated Laboratory of Brain-Computer Interfaces at the Graz University of Technology. He received his MSc in electrical and biomedical engineering in 2000, his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 2004 and his habilitation and “venia docendi” in medical informatics from the Graz University of Technology in 2008. Since 2014, he is a full professor for semantic data analysis. Prof. Müller-Putz managed several national and international projects, like Wings for Life and European Projects. He recently coordinated the EU Horizon 2020 project MoreGrasp. His extensive knowledge and experience in brain-computer interface research and related fields are crucial for improving the quality of life of patients with disorders of consciousness or high spinal cord injuries. Recently, he was awarded with the European Research Council’s Consolidator Grant “Feel your Reach” and in May 2017, he received the Ludwig-Guttmann Award from the German Medical Spinal Cord Injury Association. At TEDxTUWien 2019 Prof. Dr. Gernot Müller-Putz will introduce us to his fascinating research field and reveal interesting insights about his work with thought-controlled neuroprostheses.

Ille C. Gebeshuber

Dr. Ille Gebeshuber studied physics at TU Wien, where she completed her Ph.D. and continued her work as an associate professor at the Institute of Applied Physics, specializing in nanophysics and biomimetics. She was elected ‘Austrian of the Year’ in the category ‘Research’ in 2017. Dr. Gebeshuber has been working abroad for many years, doing her Postdoc at the Physics Department of the University of California and as a professor at the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN) at the National University of Malaysia (UKM). During her numerous jungle expeditions – not only within Malaysia but over time in many other tropical countries – she got inspired by the remarkable properties of animals and plants in the rainforest. If we understand the tricks of nature, which have continuously improved by evolution over many million years, we can use them for positive technologies. Let’s be inspired by Dr. Gebeshuber’s fascinating work at the interface between nature and technology at TEDxTUWien 2019!

His special technic and rare talent have helped him to attain a high degree of recognition on the internet and art world. Especially his Live-Drawing-Videos are popular on Instagram. In his talk at TEDxTUWien, we were introduced to building connections in daily life – like his art.

Naile Tuncer and Jannis Hagmann

The birth city of Naile Tuncer and Jannis Hagmann is not the only thing they have in common. Moreover, it's the passion for jazz music that drives both. It is a solution for restaurants to quantify the huge volumes of wasted food by employing an AI image recognition algorithm. In combination with a smart scale, this technology provides real-time actionable insights into food losses in the fields of procurement, planning, and efficiency within the kitchen. Besides the ecological and economic incentive to reduce food waste, this product can be used as a marketing tool to communicate with the customers of the restaurants. Olaf will explain how the technology of the fourth industrial revolution considerably alters the way we can face real-world problems and how it could be implemented in everyday life by disclosing progressive technology in solutions that are fit and frictionless. He will disclose how reducing food waste is economically appealing to the foodservice industry, whilst having the potential to reduce millions of kgs of food waste annually. This can only be achieved by working together between solution providers, together we can conquer this seemingly insurmountable problem!
