x = independently organized TED event

Theme: Beyond the Limit

This event occurred on
May 2, 2019
Guangzhou, Guangdong
China

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Emmet Dunphy

IB MYP & DP English Teacher, Head of English
Emmet Dunphy literally sprung from the earth several (many) moons ago, an autochthonous creature literally formed from the soil of Ireland. His early years are shrouded in mystery and intrigue, and he's simply forgotten much of his twenties. Over the past decade, he's lived a peripatetic existence, having lived and worked in the vast deserts of the United Arab Emirates before seeking out pastures literally greener in Guangzhou. His interests include reading, travelling, wood whittling, stone knapping, napping in general, and needlessly inserting big words in biographies.

En Xi Zhang

Year 8 Student from UISG
Enxi Zhang is a Y8 student from UISG and she lived in Guangzhou her whole life. Enxi is half Chinese and half Arabian. Enxi has a lot of hobbies, she started learning the piano since she was 8. At the age of 9, she started learning Taekwondo. When Enxi turned 10, she started to learn sketching, oil painting, and computer programming. Enxi also actively participates in the school sports teams, such as the touch rugby team, soccer team, badminton team, etc. She is a big fan of fantasy books. Her favorite quote from her favorite book is “you could rattle the stars”.

Hae Jun Lee

Year 8 Student from UISG
Hae Jun Lee is a Y8 student who is studying in UISG and he was born in Seoul in 2004. He speaks Korean, Chinese and English. In the past, he won different awards in Model United Nation. He actively participates in various activities such as the Battle of the Books and the Student Council. His biggest ambition is studying mechanical engineering in the future. However, as his ambition takes an extensive area in his life, addiction remains a challenging problem in his life as well. He sometimes asks himself that, would there be a specific weapon against this "monstrous disease"?

Isabel Veit

Year 8 Student from UISG
Isabel is a student in UISG, who despite her young age has plenty of ridiculous yet intriguing theories about life. Being born in a family of 2 ethnicities (Brazilian and Chinese), language has always been interesting and easy for her. Ever since she learned how to talk she has literally never stopped. With her mind full of idiosyncratic ideas she always adds creativity to everything that she does. Although she believes that she hasn’t figured her life out yet she remains a positive attitude and strives to be the best of her.

Lina Piao

Year 8 Student from UISG
Lina Piao, a Chinese student in UISG, was born in the northern region of China and was raised in both China and Japan due to her father’s job. She is full of vim and vigor, interested in technology and innovation of the world, and takes joy in swimming. Her educational life is very interesting for the fact that she has attended 5 different schools in 10 years. Her mother tongue is both English and Japanese and can comprehend a little bit of Chinese.

Rin Umeoka

Year 10 Student from UISG
Rin Umeoka is a student at UISG, who was born and raised in Japan. She moved to China because of her father’s work and came to this school in the summer of 2018. It’s her first experience living abroad and she is sometimes puzzled by the different culture and language. However, she tries to think as positively as she can. She is shy and doesn’t have enough confidence when speaking in English, but she has decided to participate in TEDx thanks to her motto, "I would rather regret doing something than not doing something".

Yui Okamoto

Year 10 Student from UISG
Yui Okamoto is a Y10 student in UISG who loves to talk and laugh with her friends. She was born and raised in Japan, and then moved to India at the age of 7. She has attended the middle school years back in Japan, and moved to UISG since 2018. Experiences in different schools made a big change in her life, and she got the new strength of getting along well in new environment. She had thought a lot about languages, so she hopes to share her ideas and encourage people through her TEDx talk.
