Entering the unknown and learning through exploration are concepts that are close to the heart of the Duke Kunshan University community. And that’s why for the first-ever TEDxDukeKunshanU we will assemble a diverse and unique assortment of speakers to explore a wide range of subjects.

We want to connect people across disciplines and inspire a spirit of inquiry. We seek to spark conversations and celebrate ideas worth spreading. We strive to create awareness and stimulate meaningful actions.

We invite the explorer in you to join us on April 24 to connect with like-minded individuals and consider a range of new and mind-opening ideas.

Jie Wang

Science writer, author of the best-selling book “The Shape of Time: Legends of Relativity

Jie Wang is a science writer, author of the best-selling book “The Shape of Time: Legends of Relativity” and host of the popular “Science Has a Story” podcast. Wang is also a speaker for the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a key member of The Voice of Science, a nonprofit organization aiming to popularize scientific knowledge.

Jinghua Zhu

CEO OF Zenith Media & Spark Foundry, China

Vivian Zhu is CEO of both Zenith Media (China) and Spark Foundry (China), which are part of Publicis Groupe, a multinational advertising and public relations company. Before returning to Shanghai in 2013, she worked for Publicis in New York and San Francisco for 10 years. After returning, she went on to hold roles as managing director in Greater China for Starcom Mediavest Group and chief digital officer of Publicis Media (China).

John Ji

Assistant professor of environmental health science and associate director of the Master of Environmental Policy program at Duke Kunshan University

Dr. John Ji is an assistant professor of environmental health science and associate director of the Master of Environmental Policy program at Duke Kunshan University. He was formerly senior editor of The Lancet. His research interest is in the intersection of environment and population health. Ji received his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and has a Ph.D. from Harvard.

Miguel Rojas-Sotelo

Art historian, visual artist at Duke University

Dr. Miguel Rojas-Sotelo is an art historian, visual artist and a visiting scholar at Duke Kunshan University. He holds a doctorate degree in visual studies, contemporary art and cultural theory from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked as visual arts director for Colombia’s Ministry of Culture from 1995 to 2001 and then as an independent artist, curator, filmmaker and critic. He teaches at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Duke University and is director of the N.C. Latin American Film and New Media Festival.

Robin Speculand

Chief executive of Bridges Business Consultancy Int, a pioneer in the field of strategy implementation

Robin Speculand is chief executive of Bridges Business Consultancy Int, a pioneer in the field of strategy implementation. His work has been featured by the BBC, CNBC and the Financial Times. Speculand started Bridges Business Consultancy after leaving his role at Citigroup as regional vice president, corporate bank, Asia-Pacific. He is an award-winning case writer, an educator for Duke Corporate Education, the co-founder of the Strategy Implementation Institute, and an adjunct faculty member with Singapore Management University’s Office of Executive and Professional Education. He holds an MBA from the National University of Singapore.

Zhizhong Li

Well-known cancer science writer, founder of the Shiyu Children Foundation

Dr. Zhizhong Li is a well-known cancer science writer, founder of the Shiyu Children Foundation and a former research investigator for the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. Li graduated from Tsinghua University and has a doctorate degree in pharmacology and cancer biology from Duke University. In 2017, he released his best-selling book “Cancer, New Knowledge: Science Ends Panic.”
