In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Ayushma Sharma Timilsina

Ayushma Sharma Timilsina is a student at The University of Texas at El Paso. She is an Undergraduate Research Assistant for the Mechanical Engineering Department, a Diversity Representative for the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Secretary of the Nepalese Student Association. Ayushma was born in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Danny Olivas

John Daniel "Danny" Olivas is an American engineer and a former NASA astronaut. Olivas has flown on two space shuttle missions, STS-117 and STS-128 and performed EVAs on both missions, totaling 34hrs 28min. In 2013 Olivas joined the University of Texas at El Paso as Director of the Center for the Advancement of Space Safety and Mission Assurance Research (CASSMAR) and now oversees space initiatives on campus.

Dr. Skateboard

Meet William H. “Dr. Skateboard” Robertson, a professor of science and technology education who has produced more than 70 educational science videos targeting K-12 educators and university teacher educators. Through “Physics of Skateboarding” demonstrations, he showcases physics and mathematics concepts in unique ways and demonstrates that service within the community can be tied closely to teaching and learning.

Erik Pavia

Erik Pavia has a BBA from The University of Texas at El Paso and a law degree from Stanford University. He gained insight into the startup world as a volunteer at Start X, Stanford’s accelerator program. This led him to the founders of Knotch, Inc., an ad analytics startup company where he became head of operations. He returned to El Paso as an adjunct professor at UTEP where he teaches a business law course focused on new tech ventures.

Gina Elizabeth Moreno

Gina Elizabeth Moreno is a student at The University of Texas at El Paso. She is a Systems Engineering Graduate Student and Research Assistant from El Paso, Texas.

Haydee Alonso

Haydee Alonso is a recent graduate of the world-renowned Royal College of Art in London, specializing in Jewellery and Metal. She was born in the border region of El Paso, Texas, USA and Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mexico. Wedged between “no man’s land” Haydee has been forced to alternate between cultures and customs in an infinite attempt to connect. Relationships. Touch. Attach. Detach.

Peter Chan

An engineering, business, and management consulting expert with over twenty-five years’ experience, UTEP Alumni Peter Chan started his career in Texas. Peter now runs his own real estate investment firm in Arizona, where he currently manages real estate investment properties, property development, investment funding, and water and wastewater consulting.

Roger Gonzaelez

Dr. Roger Gonzalez is Chair and Professor of Engineering Education and Leadership at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He is also the Founder and CEO of LIMBS International. Dr. Gonzalez’s research focus is on understanding the internal loading conditions of the human knee joint. He also conducts research on the development of ultra-low cost prosthetic devices for the developing world.

Samuel Ontiveros is a former graffiti artist turned linguistics major at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

Veronica Escobar

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar represents Texas’ 16th Congressional District in El Paso. She is the first woman elected to this seat and the first of two Latinas from Texas to serve in Congress. Prior to her service with El Paso County, Congresswoman Escobar was an English teacher at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and El Paso Community College.

Zuill Bailey

Zuill Bailey joined the music faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso in 2004. Widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world, Mr. Bailey is a multiple Grammy Award winning, internationally renowned soloist, recitalist, Artistic Director and teacher. His rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry and engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most sought after and active cellists today.
