TEDxLJUBLJANA is not only the biggest TEDx event in Slovenia, but also the TEDx event with the longest history in Slovenia.

TEDxLJUBLJANA will take place on Sunday, December 9th 2018 in Cankarjev dom. All the tickets are already sold out. However, live streaming will be available on the following website: https://livestream.com/zivo/TEDxLjubljana2018

This year we will ENLIGHTEN THE (UN)KNOWN by spreading ideas about architecture, the power of healing herbs, quality sleep, particle physics, child abuse, microbiology, laughter, improving air quality in Ljubljana, understanding suicides and the menstrual cycle.

ANDREJA BORŠTNAR

Urban spaces architect
Andreja graduated from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Archtecture, programme Urbanism, and got a Master's degree in Urban design at Aalborg University. She works with urban projects, real-estate valuation and she is also an expert witness in the field of urbanism. She started the company ATEU, where as a consultant, her greatest joy is using her personal experience when advising clients on their real-estate purchases, thus guiding them to a safe and happy real-estate use. Andreja is raising awareness on the importance of the environment in which we live in, and choosing it wisely.

DAVID STOPAR

Microbiologist
David is a microbiologist and a professor at the University of Ljubljana. In 1997, he completed his PhD in Molecular Biophysics at Wageningen University. He loves to explore the basic mechanics of the growth of microorganisms and looks for common molecular properties from a virus, a bacterium to a plant and a human being. David also seeks to understand the fear of microbes and diseases that has marked our culture. That is why he spreads the idea of the uniqueness and magnificence of every living organism on the planet. The idea of the circulation of substances where the organisms must grow and decay so that the circle of life can be restored. He is fascinated by the thought that half of life on this planet is invisible to the eyes, albeit not trivial. David restores the reputation of microorganisms and gives them a place in society.

Musicians
Glasbenici sta prvič skupaj zaigrali že v mladih letih, nato pa sta se posvetili solističnemu napredku. Leta 2016 sta Romana in Neža stopili na skupno ustvarjalno pot in od takrat navdušujeta vse večjo publiko. Na evropskih tekmovanjih dosegata priznanja, poleg tega pa redno nastopata po Sloveniji, Nemčiji, Italiji in na Hrvaškem ter se udeležujeta seminarjev pri mednarodno priznanih profesorjih.

EMIL MARINŠEK

Passionate entrepreneur
Emil has been a passionate entrepreneur since the age of 15. He studied Computer Science at the University of Ljubljana and started his first two companies in the field of IT. In 1994 he established a company in the field of producing and selling high quality mattresses. Since then, he has dedicated his time and energy to improving the quality of our sleep. He created the following brands: Lectus, Leticia, Boxspring and AntiAge. In 2009 he was one of the nominees for entrepreneur of the year. 4 years later he received an award for extraordinary business achievements by GZS (the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia). In his free time he enjoys travelling, taking photos, sailing, diving and skiing. He believes that good sleep is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, so he has spent the last several years researching sleep and its influence on our health.

GRIŠA MOČNIK

Physicist
Griša is a physicist whose main areas of research are climate change and air pollution. He is interested in determining the sources of pollution and the influence of aerosols, especially their optical properties. For 10 years Griša managed a company that developed and produced instruments for measuring aerosol black carbon and other carbon aerosols that are measured on all continents. He is a researcher at the Jožef Stefan Institute and a professor at the University of Nova Gorica. His favorite project is measuring aerosols during Matevž Lenarčič flights, which required developing small and light instruments for small and ultra-light aircraft.

JERNEJ FESEL KAMENIK

Theoretical physicist
Jernej is an associate professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Ljubljana, a senior research associate at the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Jožef Stefan Institute and a visiting scientist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN in Geneva. In 2016 Jernej received a Zois award for his scientific achievements. He is especially interested in how the basic building blocks of matter interact. Jernej says that the questions we ask are usually more important than the answers.

MANUELA HAM

Manager of the Child crisis center Thumbelina
Early in her childhood, Manuela abandoned the dream of becoming a model and a singer and told her parents that she wanted to help others. She began by rescuing and bringing home abandoned cats and secretly feeding puppies. When it was time for her to go to college, the decision to study Social Work seemed obvious. She embarked on a journey to save the world but was soon disappointed. Manuela discovered that she could not save everyone and that the world was not aboout ˇall or nothing." She became the manager of the Child crisis center Palčica (Thumbelina) which is the only such center in Slovenia. It accepts children who were taken from their parents, were abused or abandoned. In the ten years since Manuela has taken over Palčica, the center accepted over 400 children. Each of them with a story of its own. Manuela now follows a different philosophy: if you save one child, you save the whole world.

MATIC MUNC

A psychologist, a fighter for the rights of children
Matic has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and works with youth in distress. He is a survivor of sexual abuse which happened in his childhood. He kept the abuse a secret until he was 27, at which point he had a nervous breakdown and tried to commit suicide three times within a year. At the time, he had already finished his Bachelor's degree and had his first job. After college, he finished his training for psychoeducational workshops on depression and anxiety, worked at the Youth center Cona Fužine, later worked at the Family protective unit at the Center for social work and was a psychologist at the Penal institute Ljubljana. He also passed the professional exam for social care, started his education on the cognitive-behavioral therapy and opened a private psychosocial counseling office called Akcija! (Action!). Through a group within the Brez limita (No limits) Society he aims to develop honest, bold and modern techniques of working with youth, their parents and educators.

PIA NINA STRUŽNIK

Musician
Izražanje skozi petje ji predstavlja svobodo in notranji mir, ter jo vedno znova vrne k sebi. Uživa tudi v pisanju in pravi, da je igranje z besedo res neomejeno. Pia Nina je samouk, navdihujejo pa jo pevke Peggy Lee, Lauryn Hill, Sade in druge. Svoje poslanstvo povzame z besedami: "Če se v mojih občutkih začuti še kdo drug, lahko zaspim v vedenju, da je to moja pot."

SAMO KREFT

Researcher and lecturer
Samo is a full professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, where he researches and lectures on the healing effects of plants. He is known in his field as a long-term member of the European Medicines Agency and the Slovenian Medicines Agency, as well as a writer of numerous articles on healing herbs. The general public knows him by the numerous articles in various popular scientific journals, including as the author of the books Sodobna fitoterapija (Eng. Contemporary Phytotherapy) and Food Supplements. His interest in medicinal plants is grounded in the variety of fields that it combines: botany, chemistry, ecology, medicine, as well as ethnology and history. Samo is fascinated by the blurred line between researched and unexplored, evidence-based and traditional, official and alternative.

SIMONA KREBS

The co-founder of the International laughter institute
The co-founder of the International laughter institute says that laughter has followed her since birth and especially since surviving a car accident in which a car landed on her. One day she watched the movie Patch Adams and found her calling. She went to Switzerland where she was trained as a laughter yoga teacher. She then co-founded the institute with her friend Igor and got a Master's degree at the Faculty of Health Sciences with a dissertation proving that laughter can be therapeutic. The Congress Laughter: Complementary Therapy, which she co-organized, was a turning point and attracted attention in Slovenia, as well as abroad. Laughter is a gift which can bring us relief even in the hardest of times. Simona's calling is to bring laughter to all social spheres and in the lives of everyone.

VESNA JUVAN

Lecturer about Woman and their power sources
Although she attained a Master's degree in Business Administration, Vesna soon realized that she was much more interested in people than economics. She thinks of herself as a researcher of life and is particularly interested in how women and relationships work. She states that women are often not aware of their own nature and, consequently, find it difficult to explain to men who we are and what we want. Vesna is the founder of the Association Sijaj (Shine), director of the Academy for the harmony of life, leader of the workshops Heart & Womb and The workshops for wombs with responsible owners. In the workshops women are in an intimate circle and they learn how to connect with their wombs - the center of femininity, authentic power, internal leadership, joy and vitality.
