Theme: Listen.

This year’s motto is “Listen.”. Proper listening becomes more and more important in a world where attention is often gained by loudness and credibility by simplification. Listening is more than just hearing someone’s words. It requires letting go of your own point of view for a moment and getting involved with your counterpart. Listening demands empathizing with each other in order to understand a person and his or her words.

The ability to feel sincere empathy is also strongly linked to a basic understanding and an acceptance of oneself, the own motivation, needs, and anxieties. Only if we learn to listen honestly to ourselves, we can approach others openly and tolerantly.

Active and empathetic listening must be understood and practiced. With "Listen." we want to find out interactively, together with the participants, how this can be achieved.

Andreas Schanzenbach

Chief Innovation Officer und Mitgründer der Innovationsagentur CROMATICS

Andreas ist gebürtiger Dresdner und ein echter Kosmopolit. Er hat zwei Jahre in London gearbeitet und ein Jahr in Sydney. Mit CROMATICS ist er permanent unterwegs und immer auf der Suche nach neuen Formaten und Projekten. Egal ob Urban Art Wettkampf, Pop-Up-Store, Produkte, Kunstinstallationen oder Konferenzen wie 99U Local – gemeinsam mit seinem Team probiert er Neues aus und bereichert besonders gern seine Heimatstadt Dresden mit progressiven Formaten. Neben seiner primären Tätigkeit als treibende Kraft von CROMATICS, ist er auch an einer Vielzahl weiterer Projekte beteiligt, die sowohl lokal als auch global ihre Wirkung entfalten. So ist Andreas Mitgesellschafter verschiedener Start-Ups, Vorstandsmitglied einer alternativen Schule in Dresden und Mentor von Cherif Aidara Seck in Dakar, Senegal.

Anna Merkulova

Choreographer and first soloist at the Semperoper-Ballet in Dresden.

Born in Ukraine, Anna has traveled the world for her passion to dance ballet. Among others, she danced in the USA, Estland, and Denmark, before she came to Dresden in 2006. After years of hard work, she has been appointed to the first soloist in 2015. Anna completed her training as a ballet dancer at the ballet school of Donezk, Ukraine. From a very young age on, she participated in international competitions, whereby she won the 2nd prize at the International Dancing Competition in 1994 and made it to the finals of the International and Modern Dancing Competition in Nagoya, Japan.

Beate Hornemann

Leiterin des Psychoonkologischen Dienstes am Universitäts KrebsCentrum (UCC) des Universitätsklinikums Dresden

Beate studierte zunächst Klinische Psychologie in Leipzig und entschied sich nach einer Therapieausbildung zur Psychologischen Psychotherapeutin für den Tätigkeitsbereich der Psychoonkologie, einem interdisziplinären Spezialgebiet in der Medizin, das die psychologischen, sozialen und verhaltensbezogenen Aspekte von Krebserkrankungen erforscht. Seit 2006 arbeitet sie als Leiterin vom Psychoonkologischen Dienst am UniversitätsKrebsCentrum Dresden und ist in der Lehre für Medizinstudenten tätig. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit an der Uniklinik Dresden ist Beate Vorstandsmitglied der AG Psychoonkologie der Deutschen Krebsgesellschaft e.V. und hält regelmäßig Vorträge z.B. bei der Sächsischen Landesärztekammer (SLÄK) sowie der Akademie für Palliativ- und Hospizarbeit Dresden.

Bernhard Pörksen

Professor für Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Tübingen

Bernhard Pörksen ist Professor für Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Tübingen. Er erforscht die Macht der öffentlichen Empörung und die Zukunft der Reputation und veröffentlicht – neben wissenschaftlichen Aufsätzen – Essays und Kommentare in vielen Zeitungen. Seine Bücher mit dem Philosophen Heinz von Foerster („Wahrheit ist die Erfindung eines Lügners“) und dem Kommunikationspsychologen Friedemann Schulz von Thun („Kommunikation als Lebenskunst“) wurden Bestseller. Im Jahre 2008 wurde Bernhard Pörksen zum „Professor des Jahres“ gewählt. Zuletzt veröffentlichte er die Monographie: „Die große Gereiztheit. Wege aus der kollektiven Erregung“, ein Buch, das auch seine Filterclash-Theorie weiter ausführt.

Christoph Burkhardt

Entrepreneur, author and innovation facilitator

Christoph was born and raised in Germany, studied Cognitive Psychology and Business Economics in Germany, and did a Master of Science at the London School of Economics. Christoph is researching the bigger picture of corporate innovation and the effects technologies have on individual minds. His latest book provides seven survival strategies in the age of Artificial Intelligence. His message in one sentence: "Don’t be a robot". Christoph believes in a bright future for all humans if we manage to come together and develop the right skills, the ones that make us better at being humans. In 2017, he launched the think tank "TinyBox" to facilitate a paradigm shift in the way we create, execute and spread ideas that make the world a better place for everyone. As a Californian by choice, Christoph and his husband live in San Francisco.

Dajana Mehner

Grafikerin für Jugendmarketing

Dajanas Leben verlief zunächst ganz gewöhnlich. 2015 jedoch, ausgelöst durch berufliche und persönliche Turbulenzen, entwickelte sie plötzlich eine Angststörung. Dajana kämpfte sich zurück in den Alltag, konnte ihren Beruf wieder aufnehmen und schließlich ein Studium beginnen. Jetzt setzt sich Dajana dafür ein, anderen Betroffenen zu helfen. Sie möchte die Gesellschaft für eine Emotion sensibilisieren, welche aufgrund ihrer Tabuisierung und Stigmatisierung oft unnötigerweise zu krankhaften Störungen führt: Angst. Ihr Ziel ist es, dass Menschen über ihre Ängste reden und wieder stärker die hilfreiche Funktion der Angst verstehen, uns vor gefährlichen oder ungewöhnlichen Situationen oder Entwicklungen zu warnen. Dazu engagiert sie sich zu diesem Thema in der Female Future Force, hält Vorträge und möchte durch ihren offenen Umgang und die eigenen Erfahrungen mit der Angst Betroffenen Mut machen und auch Außenstehende sensibilisieren.

Ella Janes

Musician and storyteller

Ella Janes is an independent folk musician living in Berlin, who combines her love for storytelling with her passion for music in her songwriting. Her sound draws faithfully from 60s folk artists such as Simon & Garfunkel and French songstress Françoise Hardy, whose music she discovered during her time living abroad in Nantes (France) in 2013. She has supported artists like Simple Minds and was part of the London music scene as a resident of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho. Ella opened 2018 with the release of a new live EP recorded in a friend’s West London studio and has since been opening for Jools Holland at various dates on his spring and autumn tours throughout the UK, finishing at the Royal Albert Hall in London in December. She is due to release a second EP late summer.

Gerhard Fettweis

Professor für Nachrichtentechnik an der TU Dresden, Leiter des Exzellenzclusters Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) und Koordinator des 5G Lab

Gerhard Fettweis ist Professor für Nachrichtentechnik an der TU Dresden, Leiter des Exzellenzclusters Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) und Koordinator des 5G Lab. Sein Forschungschwerpunkt liegt auf der Erforschung neuer Mobilfunkkonzepte, hierfür speziell im Entwurf von Übertragungssystemen sowie deren Realisierung mit Hilfe neuer digitaler Hardware und Elektroniksysteme. Vorrangiges Ziel hierbei ist, die Datenkapazität von Mobilfunknetzen zu maximieren und Verzögerung im Datenaustausch, sowie Energieverbrauch und Kosten zu minimieren. Gerhard war zudem bei der Gründung von 12 Start-Ups beteiligt und war Initiator des HighTech Startbahn Inkubators, welcher Start-Ups beim Fundraising und bei des Geschäftsauf- und -ausbau unterstützt. Sein Studium und seine Promotion in Elektrotechnik hat Gerhard an der RWTH Aachen abgeschlossen.

Jan Blüher

Unternehmer, Informatiker und App-Entwickler

Jan erblindete aufgrund einer genetischen Erkrankung im Alter von nur 20 Jahren. Der damalige Physikstudent wechselte daraufhin sein Studienfach zu Informatik und begann sich für die Entwicklung von Apps für Blinde zu interessieren. Nach seiner Promotion an der TU Dresden gründete Jan 2011 seine Softwarefirma visorApps. Mit seiner Firma entwickelt Jan Apps und Programme speziell für Menschen, die erblindet sind oder deren Sehvermögen stark beeinträchtigt ist. Durch seine eigene Blindheit weiß der inzwischen dreifache Familienvater genau, welche Kriterien für die barrierefreie Nutzung von Computern und nutzerorientierter Software besonders relevant sind. Während die Kernzielgruppe der Apps Blinde und Sehbehinderte sind, sind sie jedoch ebenso gut für Sehende konzipiert. Neben der Programmierung von Auftragswerken und eigenen Apps hält er Vorträge, Workshops und berät Institutionen und Anbieter.

Jan Vogler

Cellist, Aufnahmekünstler, Intendant und Innovator

Als brillanter und weltbekannter Cello­-Solist spielt Jan mit den renommiertesten Orchestern weltweit. Die New York Times bewunderte das „lyrische Gespür“ seines Cellospiels, das Gramophone Magazin lobt seine „schwindelerregende Virtuosität“, und die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung attestiert ihm die Gabe, „sein Cello wie eine Singstimme sprechen lassen zu können“. Neben seinen musikalischen Aktivitäten ist Jan Intendant der Dresdner Musikfestspiele, sowie künstlerischer Leiter des Moritzburg Festivals. Für seine Konzerte, Aufnahmen und sein Engagement gewann Jan zahlreiche Preise, u.A. drei ECHO Klassik und Dresdner Erich-Kästner-Preis für Toleranz, Humanität und Völkerverständigung. Jan besuchte die Spezialschule für Musik Berlin. Er war in Berlin Schüler von Peter Vogler und Josef Schwab und in Basel von Heinrich Schiff. Er begann seine Karriere als „Erster Konzertmeister Violoncello“ in der Staatskapelle Dresden 1984 im Alter von nur 20 Jahren. Seit 1997 ist er als Solist tätig.

Oliver Groth

PhD student in Computer Vision and Robotics at the University of Oxford

Oliver is working towards a Ph.D. in Computer Vision and Robotics at Oxford, supervised by Prof. Ingmar Posner and Prof. Andrea Vedaldi. He started his scientific journey at the Computer Vision Lab Dresden under the supervision of Prof. Carsten Rother and received the Carl-Zeiss-Award 2017 for his Diplom thesis on image captioning. He also spent one year as a visiting student at the heart of Silicon Valley working at the lab of Prof. Fei-Fei Li at Stanford. Oliver studied computer science at the Technical University of Dresden. Oliver’s research focuses on the training of autonomous agents with the help of computer simulations. He is fascinated by the human “superpower” of physical intuition which enables us to execute a wide range of complex manipulation tasks. Oliver believes that this intuition can be acquired by machines in a human-like fashion: His machine learning algorithms play with elementary geometric shapes in computer simulations to learn about geometry and physics.

Ostap Okhrin

Professor for Econometrics and Statistics at TU Dresden

Since 2015, Ostap has been a professor for econometrics and statistics at the TU Dresden. Before that, he was junior professor at HU Berlin, being the youngest professor in Germany at the age of 23 at his call in 2008. His precious academic career he did on the fast track: graduating from high school with 16, he finished his Bachelor in mathematics with 20 and his Master with 21. Two years later, at the age of 23, Ostap did his Ph.D. at the Viadrina University at Frankfurt/Oder in economics. Ostap expresses the world in numbers – he is fascinated by statistics and the insights into the world that we can obtain from it. His current research topics involve among others the prediction of the price development of certain commodities in agriculture, problems in traffic and the assessment of risks caused by e.g. the weather. Hereby, the focus is on the processing of data of moderate and high dimensions of incomplete or rare data sources.

Parvathy Chandrasekhar

Ph.D. researcher in the Soil and Land-Use Management Unit at the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) in Dresden

Parvathy Chandrasekhar is a PhD researcher in the Soil and Land-Use Management Unit at the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) in Dresden. She is committed to finding solutions for today’s challenges regarding sustainable food production for a growing population with declining soil and water resources. Parvathy first came to Europe in 2012 with a scholarship from TU Delft in the Netherlands to pursue her Masters in Hydrology. She came to Dresden in 2015 to continue her research under the joint PhD programme of UNU–FLORES and TU Dresden. Her work is supervised by Dr. Kai Schwaerzel and Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Feger and funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Parvathy hopes to strengthen soil and water management strategies in the developing world through technical insights and policy changes.

Patrik Baboumian

Vegan activist, author and former strength athlete

Patrik was the "Strongest Man of Germany" winning the national German Strongman competition in 2011 in the open division. He started training and competing in bodybuilding from a very young age, winning the IFBB German junior bodybuilding championship in 1999, but his athletic focus soon shifted towards strength competitions. Between 2007 and 2015 he won several competitions and broke several world records of strength. He currently holds the world record in the Log Lift, as well as the German Heavyweight Log Lift record. Since 2005 Patrik has been a vegetarian and became a vegan in 2011. eHis veganism comes from an ethical background and is the reason why he is a vegan activist, for which he is well-known. By breaking several world strength records as a vegan athlete, Patrik also broke a lot of misconceptions and chilchés about vegans. He has written books on the subject and spoken at diverse locations advocating veganism as an ethical choice.

Razan Shalab AlSham

Syrian activist and founder of Atlas Relief and Development International (ARDI)

Razan was born in Homs, Syria where she enjoyed a privileged lifestyle and pursued an academic career in English literature until the breakout of the conflict in Syria in 2011. She instantly became a prominent local activist and a civilian journalist, documenting the violence of the Assad government on unarmed civilians. Razan fled to Turkey in 2012 where she became the Field Director for the ‘Syrian Emergency Task Force’, a position she held until 2016. During that time, she lead an ambitious portfolio of international relief and emergency response efforts. Meanwhile, she smuggled journalists, politicians, and activists along the Turkey-Syria border to spread awareness of the conflict. In 2016, Razan founded ARDI, which now works to support Syrian civilians and refugees affected by the conflict in Syria. They are based in Dresden, Germany. As a Syrian woman, activist, and young leader, Razan brings a unique perspective to the current war in Syria and the resulting refugee crisis.
