x = independently organized TED event

Theme: Passion

This event occurred on

Cupertino, California
United States

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Speakers

Speakers may not be confirmed. Check event website for more information.

Anne He

Student
Anne He is a senior at Homestead High School, and a bigot, more of which will be revealed during her presentation. One of the best habits she’s built over the years has been trying to watch one TED Talk every single night. So as you can imagine, she is absolutely stoked to be giving one!

Brandon Young

Student
Brandon Young is a 17 year old senior at Homestead High School. He is an activist for those with mental health challenges and special needs. Brandon also plays soccer, sings, writes, raps and makes music.

Cheryl Ngo

Student
Cheryl Ngo is a junior at Fremont High School. She has grown up with anxiety and depression playing inside her head like background music. As time passed, the innocent tune morphed into a deafening scream and she was unable to distinguish her own thoughts from the doubt and expectations that society presents. She realized that there were individuals that were undergoing these same experiences and yet, when asked what we do about this, we all seemed to hit a brick wall. This suffering that occurs seems invincible and it hides behind ignorance. She believes in a world not where mental illness is completely eliminated, but one in which individuals touched by mental illness learn to forgive themselves and establish peace with their internal struggle in order to better love themselves.

Dan Cohen

Student
Dan Cohen is a junior at Homestead High. Secretly, he is actually a Timelord who has plagiarized his entire speech from a future Homestead TEDx Event. When he’s not saving the universe or studying for his APs he loves reading, writing, and going vegan for 3 hours at a time. Although most people think that he is allergic to dairy, the truth is that he is simply made of so many cheesy jokes that eating dairy is cannibalism. He is extremely humbled and honored to be speaking to you at this year’s Homestead TEDx event and sincerely hopes you enjoy.

James Edwards

Student
James Edwards is a french horn player at Homestead High School and in the California Youth Symphony Senior Orchestra. He studies with teacher Liane Sharp-Fuccio. Accolades include his selection to the California All-State Wind Symphony and the Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Wind Ensemble.

Jianna Gladfelter
