In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Elaine Kusuma

Elaine Kusuma is a senior in British School Jakarta. She believes that our existence is not just a position, it’s about having the ability to create a connection with people and have the power to make a difference. She states, “We are living in a society with many challenges, yet our biggest fight comes from the inability to find a constructive solution. More importantly, women in Indonesia suffer more compared to men, and this is an issue that often ignored from the society I live in.” With this being said, she has a goal to achieve: building solutions that will benefit not only yourself but others. She built an interactive app and a website called ‘Stacksindo’ where it can make a saving and spending plan based on their own income situation, suggestions for investment, which all can be accessed on their phones. She tends to educate financial literacy towards the underprivileged population, mainly women; especially when financial literacy is the basic knowledge for a sustainable life.

Jerick Hartono

Jerick Hartono is a 17 year old, partially deaf student. He was driven by his own experiences, and with his unique position of standing on the line between the deaf and hearing words, he aims to help bridge those two together. Seeing that too few people are aware of the existence of the Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO), have access to it, and that not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to hearing technologies, Jerick founded his own non-profit organisation: Volume Up! As a social entrepreneur, his organisation's project was to create a free mobile phone application that teaches BISINDO. This was made to raise awareness of BISINDO and hopefully pique people's interest to learn the language. As now almost everyone has a mobile phone, this solves the problem of inaccessibility to learning BISINDO.

Sowmya Kadandale

Sowmya has extensive experience working in internationaland non-profit settings. She is currently Chief of Health in UNICEF Indonesia, prior to which she was with the World Health Organization for a decade, advising countries in strengthening their health systems. Sowmya has been actively engaged in a variety of programmes across Africa, Asia, and Europe, with her most recent WHO posting in Sierra Leone in support of the government's Ebola recovery efforts.
