TEDxUTAR is a full day event curated by our organizing chairperson, Mr. Tan Sheng Yee and his team, with an expected audience of about 100. Our goal is to bring together bright minds to give talks on a wide range of subjects that are idea-focused as well as foster learning, inspirations and wonders. All in all, to provoke conversations that matter.

The event will be themed "Critical Evolution". With this central idea in mind, we would like to cover all manners of topics, whether it be the need for rapid innovation in the burgeoning world of science and technology, which requires social and political reforms to foster such innovation, or the need of spiritual and medical remedies aimed at alleviating the negative psychological impacts from the breakneck speed of modern life.

Alex Chee

Fitness Model
Alex Chee is a local fitness model, one would know through this muscular and macho body shape. However, he is not simply a fitness model, by applying his strong knowledge on fitness, he started his journey as a fitness entrepreneur and motivator. He has dedicated his time to empower growth in health, body, mindset and self improvement to people. He has become an inspiration for others to take action instead of doing nothing. He encourages others to do the right things during times of hardships to change for the better. Alex is focusing on making an impact through social media. He shows the truth of what fitness can do and how risk-taking in decision-making in other life aspect can transform an individual’s perspective of the life outside of the status quo to an extraordinary life. He has been featured on two Men Health’s cover for Malaysia and Singapore by the time he turned 23. Correspondingly, he has a mass follower of 200k followers around the world on social media.

Alfred Netto

Author, Coach
Alfred Netto is a well-known published author. In fact, he is very much known for the book he wrote, ‘Habitude’, which can be found in bookstores across Malaysia. The other remarkable achievement he has gained is that he is one of the youngest coaches in Malaysia to be a Professional Certified Coach credentialed by the International Coach Federation (ICF). Fantastic! Plus, his recognition is enhanced with the qualification as a Certified TRAIT Personality Assessor by the Aston Business School in the United Kingdom. Indisputably, with such outstanding qualifications and knowledge, Alfred’s service on coaching and training has successfully fascinated multiple well-known clients; for example, HSBC, VOLVO Malaysia, SAP, Lafarge Malaysia, Telekom Malaysia, MUDA Holdings Bhd, Maybank, Royal Malaysian Police, Celcom, and Malaysia International Chamber of Commerce. Malaysia is filled with talents, is it not?

Archana Vijai Kumar

Motivational Speaker, Law graduate
Archana is a strong believer in the power of change through self-development, spirituality and leadership. Learning the art of living has always intrigued her and she has always worked to bring about change for the better in every possible way She realised that self-growth comes mainly from your expressive abilities through written words. This came as an unexpected realisation through her experience as Junior Judge of The Royal Commonwealth Society. Falling in love with words, she decided to blog regularly to shares articles on self-growth and personality development Archana has then since given talks about spirituality, leadership and self-development. To increase her knowledge on such topics, she started speaking on various platforms on the importance of passion, leadership, spirituality and the leap forward that we should take daily. She conducted various workshops, talks and seminars to youth children on how they can use their voice and abilities to change the world.

Fave believes small and medium businesses is the backbone of the economy and their mission is to assist the businesses to grow online. In fact, Mr. Yeoh is the co-founder for this great creation. Initially, Yeoh, a Cornell-University-graduate, was a product manager at JobStreet.com and a management consultant at Accenture. Before building Fave, Yeoh had led regional operations for Groupon Asia Pacific as COO for Groupon Malaysia and Taiwan in 2012. For your information, Groupon is a well-known worldwide e-commerce marketplace connecting subscribers with local merchants. Apart from establishing Fave, Yeoh has the enthusiasm in involving himself in Malaysian start-up ecosystem by supporting young entrepreneurs through mentoring. Moreover, he has been supporting 10 start-ups by investing too.

Chris Lau

Freelance Journalist & Photographer
Chris has been a freelance journalist and photographer since 2011. He started his journey as an ordinary backpacker and a frequent traveller around West Asia and the Middle East. Risk is what he takes. Passionate to let the world know about the impacts of wars, he documents his journey as he backpacks across war zones such as Syria, Afghanistan, and Iran. Since 2012, he had been risking his life over the sound of merciless gunshots, desperate to make the cries for peace of the victims heard. As a freelance war journalist, he has also been featured on several Malaysia’s newspaper such as Borneo Post, The Sun Daily and MalaysiaKini.

When it comes to comedy in Malaysia, Douglas Lim is the one that comes to our minds. His natural ability in bringing laughter to people from all walks of life has earned him the name of King of Malaysian Comedy After playing as Steven the Stylist on “Kopitiam” - Malaysia’s most successful English Sitcom, he was being nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy in the Asian Television Awards. Since then, he has starred and featured in local movies, TV shows, musicals, and comedy showcases Douglas started and headlined Malaysia’s most successful Stand-up Comedy Tour Group - the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians. The tickets for the shows played were all sold-out and their shows are the most anticipated annual comedy shows in Malaysia Many top corporations; Petronas, TM, and Nestle, has invited him for their events, in which he often becomes the highlight of those events. His emceeing services are undoubtedly amazing and is very much proven from the returning demands from the corps

Gurmit Singh

Environmentalist, Social Activist and Engineer.
Mr. Gurmit Singh is the Chairman for the Centre for Environment, Technology & Development, Malaysia (CETDEM). He had built his name as a renowned environmentalist to be the founding President, and now, an advisor of the Environmental Protection Society, Malaysia (EPSM). A few other notable involvements are being the representative for the National Steering Committee on Climate Change (NSCCC), and National Committee on Clean Development Mechanism (NC-CDM). To really make a global impact, he was appointed the regional coordinator of the Climate Action Network Southeast Asia (CANSEA) for 3 terms. Over the years, Gurmit has been recognised for his work to preserve the environment. In 2008 and 2009, he received the Sustainable Consumer Award from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry. More recently, he was conferred the UN Malaysia Award 2013 for the UN Millennium Development Goals 7 (MDG7), and the Green Catalysts Award by the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation in 2015.

Hasan Al- Akraa

Volunteer Network
Mohamad Hasan Al Akraa was born in Aleppo, Syria, a country where war is very common. For the safety and future of their family, Hasan and his family fled their country and arrived Malaysia in 2012 during the escalation of the Syrian Civil War. Since then, they have struggled to make a living as refugees, but they never regretted leaving their country, which is still at war. Hasan had this calling to do something different, something that would help his community and the refugee children. With that, he started volunteering in a few refugee learning centres, and eventually founded the "Al-Hasan Volunteer Network", a non-profit organisation running more than 13 projects for the communities in Malaysia and for the youth. Hasan has spoken in many conferences and events, including TEDxAPUKL and TEDxAlbukhary. He speaks Arabic, English and Malay fluently. For his perseverance, he is now fortunate enough to able to pursue his tertiary education here in Malaysia.

John-son Oei

Founder and Group CEO of EPIC Collective
EPIC stands for Extraordinary People Impacting Community, where its flagship programme is a non-profit initiative called EPIC Homes; a system that empowers ordinary people to build sustainable homes for families, and develop relationships while doing so. His idea was developed with the help of friends and over 40 architects, engineers and designers which culminated into a modular building system. They have built more than 100 homes while working with over 5000 volunteers, from more than 50 countries and over 40 renown organisations including multinational companies like Prudential, Energizer, and Nestle, to name a few. John-Son's work has won him recognition and awards throughout the world; amongst his most recent awards includes being listed in Forbes 30 under 30 2016, SME Malaysian Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2017, The Edge Inspiring Young Leaders Award, and 2012 Commonwealth day in the presence of the Queen Elizabeth.

Kim Lim

Founder of the Picha Project
Picha Project is a social enterprise which aims to empower marginalized communities in Malaysia through sustainable food catering and delivery business. Ultimately, with aid from professional guidance, this project is one of the greatest platform for marginalized families to cater food for the public, providing them with job opportunities. She has won an award in The Edge Inspiring Young Leaders Awards 2017 and was also recently listed as one of the Forbes 30 under 30 Asia. Besides involving herself greatly into the work of the social sector and economic empowerment, she also co-founded a social enterprise focusing on education for refugees named E-lluminate Meet the brains behind "Ola Bola". As Malaysians, I bet you must have heard about “Ola Bola”, a locally produced movie showcasing the legacy of Malaysian football. She is a musician, a composer, a guitarist for this movie. She was also involved musically in movies like J-Revolusi, Shuttle Life and the 2017’s Paralympic SEA games.

Queenie Tan

International Speaker, Author, CEO of International Company
Queenie Tan (MEd, BEd, DipT), a small town girl from Klang, has won half a dozen awards for best parent coach of the year for 2017 and 2018 by Global 100, Acquisition International and APAC Insider. She has two podcasts with over 150k downloads on iTunes. She is also the author of 'Cool Stuff Your Parents Never Told You about Parenting' and 'Our Learning Journey as Eco Explorers'. Being an international speaker and author of 3 published books, Queenie also runs an international company comprising a team of 14 members. That being said, she is an early childhood educator, who enjoys sharing her knowledge and expertise with other early childhood educators and parents alike. Queenie is also dyslexic, struggles with sensory processing issues, and a host of other learning difficulties. But, that didn’t stop her from being the top of her game as Asia’s Premier Parenting Coach, a veteran preschool teacher (in Hong Kong, Singapore and China) and a university lecturer for more than a decade.

Stan has been in the IT & management industry for the past 15 years. Started as a lone employee in foreign lands, his dedication & independence have proven to be one of his strengths Stan is often invited to speak in public and closed settings, sharing enterprises Security and Business IT. He had spoken in more than 300 sessions thus far. His latest venture was being a panelist and speaker for Pikom Leadership Submit 2012, an event co-organized by The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the National ICT association of Malaysia, PIKOM, touching on topic of Mobile Business & its opportunities Today, Stan is running his own entity, Convedge Sdn Bhd focusing on Business Performance Enhancement (BPM) for enterprises and SME. Stan is now leading PIKOM Big Data Special Interest Group to provide insight and awareness on the benefits of Big Data to all business owners, this initiative will see the growth of new IT spectrum to further enrich the local business IT scenes.
