In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alec Borislow

Student Leader
Alec Borislow is a freshman at The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University. An advocate of the power of storytelling, he believes that shared experiences are the key to understanding and improving our culture. Alec’s interests are law, media studies, and philosophy. He hopes to expand beyond his academic pursuits through public speaking, creative writing, and philanthropy. Born in Philadelphia, Alec is a resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Amanda Viller

Student Leader
Amanda Viller is an Honors College Student majoring in Transdisciplinary Visual Arts and minoring in Digital Marketing. She was born in Venezuela, raised in Mexico and has come to the U.S. to get her degree. She hopes to work in a social media company providing visuals, and other communications, and if she can't find it she'll build her own company to aid non-profits by providing advertising and social media consulting and campaigns.

Craig Halsey

Professor of Military Science
LTC Halsey has served seventeen years as an Officer in the United States Army. He is a career, active duty, Aviation Officer, with over 1600 total rotary-wing flight hours in the AH-64D Longbow Apache and AH-6A Apache Attack Helicopters. LTC Halsey has four deployments, including combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, and overseas duty in the Republic of Korea. He has fulfilled all his key leader development assignments in both Training and Deployed environments, to include: AH-64 Platoon Leader (Fort Hood, Texas; Republic of Korea), AH-64D Company Commander (Fort Campbell, Kentucky: Operation Iraqi Freedom I & IV), and Battalion Operations Officer & Executive Officer (Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia; Operation Enduring Freedom IX). LTC Halsey has also served as Senior Aviation Trainer within the United States Army’s Mission Command Training Program (MCTP) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Davina Alexander

Student Leader
Davina Newman-Alexander is a non-traditional transfer student in her second year at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of FAU, pursuing a concentration in molecular biology and a minor in ethics. Davina’s dream is to be a principal investigator in Down syndrome research, particularly in the rare forms of mosaicism, and translocation Trisomy 21. Her interest stems from having a child with mosaic translocation Trisomy 21, whose medical anomalies have been dismissed as “just Down syndrome.” Davina is also a proud Navy Mom, and self-advocate for women’s mental health issues.

Douglas McGetchin

Professor of History
Doug McGetchin is a Professor of History at Florida Atlantic University where he specializes in the history of connections between Modern Germany and South Asia, doing research and teaching classes about modern Germany, modern Europe, ancient and modern South Asia, world history, and the Second World War. He is the author of Indology, Indomania, Orientalism: Ancient India’s Rebirth in Modern Germany (2009) and a co-editor of Gendered Encounters between Germany and Asia (2017). He received a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar Research Award in 2013-2014 to conduct research in Kolkata (Calcutta) India on his currently book project “The Boycott or the Bullet: Debates over Nonviolence in Indo-Western Anti-Imperialist Struggles,” featuring interconnections between Europe, India, and the United States. He is the Associate Director for the Jupiter campus of FAU’s Peace, Justice, and Human Rights (PJHR) initiative and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Reagan era.

Jessica Young

Student Leader
Jessica Young is a freshman at Florida Atlantic University, Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. She has completed a number of research projects in the area of environmental and animal sciences. In 2017, Jessica was awarded First Place and Best in Category for Animal Sciences at the Intel International Engineering and Science Fair, for her research on apple snails. In addition, Jessica has created curriculum on Everglades ecology for FAU Pine Jog Environmental Education Center.

Jonathan Jimenez

Student Leader
Jonathan Jimenez believes everyone should know that hope is available for them and they are able to lead their lives into the life they are called to. Featured in Sun Sentinel’s Character Counts, recognized as a leader within Florida Atlantic University and its Lead & Serve Center, and lives actively within his community, Jonathan understands the key to leadership and creating life-change is serving others. Concluding his studies in Marketing & Finance while drawing from his experiences, Jonathan aims to use business to create change for the better both within and outside the field while sharing hope with individuals every step of the way. “We are most alive when we choose to be freely our self and lovingly live for a purpose bigger than ourselves.” Connect with him at @iamJonJim in social platforms!

Kevin Moreau

Student Leader
Kevin Moreau is a 25 year old that believes that life is too short to not live up to your full potential. He is a current Graduate student and Graduate assistant at the School of Florida Atlantic University. He is a leadership ambassador. He is also the author of The Invitation to Your Life (Trimark, 2017) and the proud son of a veteran. Kevin strives to make a difference in the lives of others by spreading hope and motivation through his Instagram page @Kevpositivity and by being a mentor to students. Making a positive influence is his current work.

Stephanie Lazo

Stephanie Lazo is your not your average college student. Having interned at both scripps and FAU’s brain institute, before tackling her thesis in an interdisciplinary science and social sciences genre. She loves all athletic endeavors and is never opposed to added adventure. Being born and raised in Miami, Florida Stephanie has a love for good food and good music.

Tasmiah Rahman

Tasmiah Rahman is a junior at FAU honors college working for a bachelors degree in neuroscience. Tasmiah has successfully managed a life of being a student, working in a pharmacy and various jobs in student government without sacrificing time for loved ones. She believes that kindness is the best cure for everything. She has aspirations of being a clinical pharmacist and enjoys painting when stressed.

Victoria Hayes

Victoria Hayes is an early admit student at FAU H.L. Wilkes Honor College and is a senior at Wellington High School. She was born and raised in South Florida and grew up with three older brothers. When she isn’t studying hard for her classes, she enjoys relaxing with a good book or hanging out with friends. She plans on following in her dad’s footsteps by pursuing a career in business/law.
