At the third annual TEDxSMICSchool event, we challenge our attendees to seek the truth and dare to take action. We will bring the brightest minds around the world to Shanghai with speakers from all walks of life, from young students to creative artists to multi-billion dollar entrepreneurs.

Alex Chang

Alex Chang is the founder and CEO of Ivy-Way Academy. He received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Harvard University and continued his studies at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He started his own company in his senior year of college, and left his role as the Head Teaching Fellow at Harvard University in order to focus on education. Now, with 12 years of teaching experience, Alex looks forward to share his knowledge on college application processes. Brian Ge

Brian Ge is a high school senior at The SMIC Private School, located in Shanghai, China. As a result, he is able to personally relate to the parent-teenage strife. Moreover, from his personal experiences, he is able to suggest what could be done to prevent these struggles.

Dr. Quinn Hiroshi Gibson

Dr. Quinn Hiroshi Gibson was born in Canada and received his his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley. Quinn is currently a Teaching Fellow at New York University Shanghai. His work focuses primarily on the philosophy of psychology and psychiatry, and ethical questions that arise in that connection. He is also interested in what mental disorders are and how they are related to ‘normal’ psychological functioning, why mental disorders are bad (if and when they are), the cognitive neuropsychology and neuropsychiatry of delusion and addition, and how these issues relate to questions about moral responsibility and free agency.

Jack Chou

Dr. Chou was a Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor eat Drexel University, and Research Scientist at Industrial Technology Research Institute (Hsin-Chu, Taiwan). He then devoted himself to elementary and secondary education globally. Dr. Chou has expertise in science education, parenting, character building, and life coaching, on which he published over 20 papers. Matthew Yang

Why are some people so productive that their day seems to contain 36 more hours? Why do some people improve their skills rapidly when others are still walking on the treadmill? In this talk, Matthew Yang incorporates his academic and debate experiences to explore the art of mindful living and to present a series of steps that will instantly increase your productivity and fulfillment.

Nelson Zhang

A Torontonian, Nelson was selected for a Thiel Fellowship while attending the University of California at Berkely, providing him with &100,000 to drop out of college and become an entrepreneur. Along with Richie Zeng, Nelson launched Wearhaus, a successful Kickstarter project with thousands of backers. Nelson now lives in Shanghai and continues to work on Wearhaus, which creates smart earbuds and headphones for the modern user. Penny Jin

Penny Jin is the founder of iStage Academy, a bilingual performing arts academy providing students as well as adults performing arts programs at three different locations in Lujiazui, Jinqiao Biyun, and former French concession. Before moving to Shanghai, Penny studied and lived in the UK and Hong Kong, where she developed her passion for performing arts.

Sunny Hu

Sunny Hu is a senior from the SMIC Private School and one of SMIC's Class of 2018. As an aviation enthusiast, Sunny studied flight manuals of modern airliners in high school and is looking forward to majoring in mechanical or aerospace engineering. He also founded a club to experiment on fixed-wing drones with his friends with deep knowledge in engineering. Besides his love for aviation, Sunny also maintains a healthy lifestyle via a regular training for triathlons. Tiger Ko

Tiger Ko, a 17-year-old student athlete and actor at the SMIC Private School, shares his experience on acting and how acting has changed his life. At the time of giving this talk, he had already acquired more than two years of acting experience through taking drama and video production courses at SMIC. Travers Barclay Child

Travers Barclay Child (PhD, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) is a Lecturer of Finance at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). His research examines the impact of post-conflict reconstruction on insurgency. For this he traveled to Afghanistan to conduct field interviews with reconstruction/development stakeholders. Travers’ research is published in well-regarded journals of economics and political science, and he has been recipient of numerous grants and awards. He has done consultancy work for the World Bank and was visiting researcher at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He has lived in 9 countries and traveled across more than 60 nations.
