TEDxRedmond curator Adora Svitak had the opportunity to speak at TED last year and created TEDxRedmond, a youth event with speakers from around the US. This will be our second year running the event. Past TEDxRedmond speakers include Jordan Romero, youngest person to climb Mt. Everest; Alec Loorz, founder of Kids vs. Global Warming; and Jessica Markowitz, founder of Richard's Rwanda, which sends Rwandan girls to school (go to tedxredmond.com/speakers for more information).
We've earned a lot of attention for a unique fact--TEDxRedmond is by youth, for youth. Our organizing committee is comprised of tweens and teens; all of our speakers are under 18; and high school and middle school students make up our target audience. (However, there will also be some parents, educators, and civic leaders present this year). Last year, we had an audience of over 750 people.
Because our goal is to help the community, students attend for free. Due to our uniqueness in being youth-run, we've seen incredible media coverage and support, with movement in schools and on Facebook and Twitter. Our proudest moment was when Chris Anderson tweeted about us! However, we've had many proud moments since, especially reading students' responses to the question "Why do you want to attend TEDxRedmond?" One student said that after attending, she had been so inspired that they joined an organization to prevent teen suicide and tobacco use, helped create a safe and bully-free school, and donated on Kiva.
