This year we are focusing on issues that are arising in our communities, classrooms, and country. There is so much happening in the world and so many voices to be heard. We are so excited to share the ideas and talks that are speakers are preparing to for the TEDx stage!

Carlos Hernandez

JWU Student
I come from a family of 8 . Raised in Florida , yet born in Houston, Texas. I been writing mostly poetry for 4 years now , found a desire for cooking not to long ago, love the running part in my life where I dream about what i want and work towards it, , and the things that make life challenging and raising the bar higher , and higher. I love speaking, even though I haven't done this type i enjoy sharing my experience with some odd things but also listening to others as the reached their pinnacle or are getting there. I am currently studying at Johnson & Wales university do my best in anything. I try and fail and fail until i make it.

Davian Watson

Davian is a young entrepreneur who has been studying the trends of the American Snacker and foodie. He also studies at Johnson and Wales University. Davian has his Associates Degree in Culinary Arts; 6 years of culinary experience and is now studying what it takes to become a Food and Beverage Entrepreneur for his bachelor’s degree.

Elijah Armstrong

Penn State University Student
After facing extreme discrimination in high school, Elijah began his work in advocacy. He is committed to making sure students understand the laws protecting their civil rights. As part of that commitment, he started a nonprofit called Equal Opportunities for Students. One goal of the organization is informing and empowering students, families and community leaders to counter discrimination. Participation in Equal Opportunities for Students stretches from Rhode Island to California. Elijah has worked directly with policy advisers to President Obama, the US Department of Education and New York City Public Schools advocating student rights. He has also presented at the International Disability Studies conference and Columbia University. Elijah is a junior at Penn State University’s University Park campus, studying Education and Public Policy.

Erika Roberts

Operations Review Specialist for The Florida Department of Corrections Bureau of Professional Development and Training
Erika Roberts is a graduate of FSU with a Masters Degree in Criminology & a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management Homeland Security. In 2014, she completed coursework &received an executive certificate from Georgetown University on Reducing Racial and Ethnic Disparities. It has since guided her career in the workforce populations of law enforcement, child welfare & social services. Erika now works for the Florida Department of Corrections in the Bureau of Professional Development & Training. She is a passionate advocate for equality & believes in the importance of staying humble, learning something new every day, volunteering & seeing the possibilities in what otherwise seems impossible. She hopes to inspire & empower change using targeted & creative training initiatives while encouraging open dialogue & connecting people to share real world experiences that represent the value of overall positive progress. Erika dedicates this talk to her late Nona; Electra Mercedes Fernandez.

Renzo Javier Barrantes

Doctoral Candidate, Data Analyst, Adjunct Professor
Renzo J. Barrantes is a Doctoral Candidate in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Florida International University and is currently wrapping up his dissertation project entitled “A re-examination of the double bind dilemma: Assessing the moderating role of leader sexual orientation” in which he explores how a leader’s gender, sexuality, and leadership style interact to affect important outcomes for them and their subordinates in the hopes of better understanding the phenomenon of leadership for women and sexual minorities in the workplace. He also works full-time as a Data Analyst at Clutch Prep, an educational tech startup, and is an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Florida International University.

My name is Trung Hoang Le. I am a 20 years old student majoring in Culinary Arts & Food Service Management at Johnson & Wales University. I was born and raised in Hanoi, Vietnam. I have studied in the U.S for about 6 years. I was also the valedictorian in my high school back in New York. I believe that life is a learning process, and I believe that I have evolved from my successes in life as well as past failures and mistakes ( especially in my love life). I enjoy working out, listening to music, learning mathematics and computer engineering, giving small acts of kindness, and helping others to live a better life.
