Theme: Guul iyo Gobanimo

TEDxHargeisa couldn’t have come at a better time; political news saturated the media after a period of heavy campaigning and an election. TEDxHargeisa came to shift the focus from politics to something else, to inspirational ideas.
Seven speakers shared their ideas from across different disciplines. After the event’s conclusion, a national conversation started among the youth where the question: ‘What have you added of value to the community?’ was raised.

Awale Ismail Sulieman

Poet and Social Activist

He holds a Bachelor Degree in Development Studies from Golis University. He is a founding member of the Campaign to Eradicate Tribalism: “Ololaha cidhibtirka Qabyaaladda”.

Dr. Hussein A. Bulhan

Founder and President of Frantz Fanon University

Dr. Bulhan is a graduate of Wesleyan University, Boston University, and Harvard University. He is the Founder and President of Frantz Fanon University in Hargeisa, Somaliland. He is the author of several major publications and numerous articles, including Frantz Fanon and Psychology of Oppression.

Dr. Jama Musse Jama

Ethnomathematician and Author

Dr. Jama is a well-known and respected ethnomathematician and author of Somali language and literature. He has a PhD in African Studies specializing in Computational Linguistics of African Languages. He is the Director of Redsea Cultural Foundation and Hargeysa Cultural Centre. He is the Founder/Organizer of Hargeysa International Book Fair, one of the most important literature festivals and book celebration in Africa.

Hassan Ali Daoud

Activist and Volunteer

A Medical Student at Amoud University’s School of Medicine and General Surgery. He is an avid campaigner for a Better Health Care System for all Somalilanders, he is also involved in projects to reduce the national maternal and infant mortality rate. He is also a volunteer at Somaliland Lifemakers, a Mentor at the Non-formal Education Sector of the Awdal Regional Office of Ministry of Education and He works as an Online Program Officer for Islamic Online University.

Mohamed Yassin Abdirahman

Environmentalist

Mohamed has a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Hargeisa. He is the founder of Rejo Beer-Geed Beer, a youth-led initiative to tackle climate change by planting trees, promoting awareness of the environment and restoring hope. He is Head of Planning and Coordination for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Prior to this, he worked for several organizations both in public and private institutions including the Imperial Institute of Environmental Consulting, Ministry of Research and Technology and Somaliland Environmental Protection Centre.

Nour-Alhuda Ali Banfas

Nour-alhuda holds a BS Of Criminal Justice and Police Science, a Bachelor degree in Global Studies And International Relations and Master’s Degree in IR and Diplomacy. She has worked in the Human Rights field. She is a photographer and Author of the Photo book “Kayd Degaan”.

Sami Abdi Gabas

Entrepreneur

Saami holds an IT Degree from KCA University. He is a serial entrepreneur. He started his first business from scratch. He believes in creation of business without capital, he has overcome great hardship in his life, from having nothing to providing job opportunity to young youth in his new innovative business. He is also a runner who spends his free time training for distance running.
