Theme: Dreams, Discoveries and Destinations

Dreams, Discoveries and Destinations alludes to very many things; self-discovery, voyage, scientific endeavors to mention a few.
It also has an air of positivity and with everything that has been going on in the present world, this is very much needed. Our theme encourages speakers to shed light on many things, from personal experiences to scientific discoveries and everything in between that has completely changed the way we think. As this event will be happening at United World College of Southern Africa, this theme appeals to a lot of students as we are constantly asking ourselves questions like: Who am I? Where am I going? Where have I been? What is my place in this world? etc. The main aim of this event is to provide insight into some of these questions from variety of perspectives and how they relate to the macrocosm which is the world we live in.

Aliki Antoniou

Aliki is a second year at Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA. She is half Greek and half German and grew up in the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Her interests lie in cooking, societal and environmental concepts and changes. She hopes to broaden her knowledge and understanding of multiculturalism in a global society.

Angelou Dumaraog

Student

Angelou Dumaraog is an IB1 student at Waterford Kamhlaba. He lived the first twelve years of his life in a small rural town in the Philippines. His next four years were spent studying in the bustling city of Manila. Angelo’s interests include politics, theology and music. He spends his free time either watching Scandal or Madonna concerts on DVD.

Daeun Kim

Student

Daeun Kim is a student at Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa. She is South Korean but has lived in Mozambique and Swaziland for her entire life. She is passionate about expanding her horizons and challenging present fields. She does not believe in limits. She aspires to become someone who can make a positive impact, no matter how minute, in her community.

Donna Rwabuhemba

Student

Donna Rwabuhemba is an IB2 student at Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa. She was born in Uganda, but grew up in Lesotho, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. She is excited to finish high school and go on to pursue economics and international relations in university. She is a passionate advocate for women’s rights and decreasing the gap between the rich and poor. In her spare time she enjoys reading, watching movies and talking with her mum.

Ella Rockart

Student

Ella Rockart is an IB1 student at Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa. She grew up in the United States, and is a passionate advocate of social justice and equality. Back in the States, she was a youth leader of the Partners in Health Engage and a participant in the local LGBTQIA community. Her dream is to work with the International Court of Justice, keeping governments accountable for the rights of their people.

Josh Voigt

Waterford Kamhlaba Alum

Josh Voigt is an alum of Waterford Kamhlaba having graduated in 2015. Josh grew up in South Africa, where he studied at mostly white all-boys schools from 2008 to 2011, following which he moved to Waterford. Josh now studies at Wartburg College in the United States of America and serves as the Diversity Chair on the school’s Student Senate. Josh hopes to insight acknowledgement, understanding, and acceptance of differences between people around the world.

Mridul Manas

Student

Mridul Manas is a student at Waterford Kamhlaba from New Delhi, India. Mridul is passionate about changing the way systems of our world work, focusing specifically on social innovation and relationships between economies and development and aid strategies.

Nishi Felton

Nishi Felton is a student at Waterford Kamhlaba, who was born and grew up in Southern Africa. Interested in societal norms, she has developed this TEDx talk out of personal experiences and observations. Her interests include conservation and environmentalism, as well as issues of social injustice. Growing up in a Southern African context has helped her foster these, and has also lead her to question issues of identity and diversity, those being the major themes of her and Aliki’s talk.

Nishi Felton is a student at Waterford Kamhlaba, who was born and grew up in Southern Africa. Her interests include conservation and environmentalism, as well as issues of social injustice. Growing up in a Southern African context has helped her foster these, and has also lead her to question issues of identity and diversity, those being the major themes of her and Aliki’s talk. Aliki is a second year at Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA. She is half Greek and half German and grew up in the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Her interests lie in cooking, societal and environmental concepts and changes. She hopes to broaden her knowledge and understanding of multiculturalism in a global society. In their talk, Nishi and Aliki discuss what it truly means to be a global citizen. Touching on self-identification and the concept of third-culture kids, theirs is a talk that many can relate to and be inspired by.

Sparsh Gautam

Sparsh Gautam is a student at Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa. Sparsh’s interests lie mainly in the sciences and mathematics, apart from their complexity, these subjects reveal themselves in the most amazing ways in nature. Sparsh is inspired by the link between cultural beliefs and sciences and that knowingly or unknowingly belief systems implement scientific knowledge in many ways. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, reading about the latest scientific advancements and most definitely socializing with friends. He is passionate about improving the provision of scientific and mathematical knowledge around the world.
