On 20 May 2017 Aston University will host its third TEDx event. This year the theme of the event is “The Time is Now”. We are looking forward exploring “Time” as a precious resource of the 21st century and get inspired by the speakers talking about the importance of taking action now, not waiting for tomorrow or looking back at yesterday.

Dixon Jones

Gary Hutt

Professional in High Performance Sport, CEO of Volleyscience
Openness, transparency, honesty and sharing are fundamental to Gary’s philosophy surrounding coaching and life. Gary’s current focus is on making knowledge from the sports sciences accessible to benefit the widest possible audience worldwide. As a strength and conditioning coach working across a handful of top universities in the United Kingdom, his professional development has taken place on the apex between the science and art of coaching. Based on this, he has a wealth of experience helping athletes competing across the full spectrum of performance levels from grassroots right up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in almost every sport you can think of! His work in the elite sport currently centres around supporting athletes in volleyball and disability sport to be physically prepared to reach their potential. In his talk Gary is going to be exploring the abundance of misinformation in the fitness industry.

Jodie Cook

Co-founder of Clever Tykes enterprise education storybooks and teaching resources. Owner of JC Social Media.
After starting a social media agency at the age of 22, Jodie Cook became fascinated with the childhood influences that encourage enterprise and entrepreneurship. This led to her co-creating Clever Tykes: a series of children’s storybooks that inspire positive, resourceful and creative behaviour in primary school children. In January 2017 Jodie, along with her Clever Tykes cofounder, secured sponsorship to gift the storybooks and teaching resources to all 23,000 primary schools in the United Kingdom and they are now determined to do this in every country. As part of her talk for TEDxAstonUniversity, Jodie will expose her ideas about enterprise education and how we can prepare the future generation for jobs that don’t exist yet. Max Little

Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) Mathematics Group, Aston University. TED speaker in 2012, TED Fellow. Visiting Associate Professor MIT Media Lab, Human Dynamics Group.
Professor Max Little is an applied mathematician with a background in computer sciences and statistics. He gave a talk at TEDGlobal Conference in 2012 on how to detect the symptoms of Parkinson's using a smartphone. The talk led to an overwhelming response of over 18, 000 participants for his research. Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics in the University of Birmingham
Ruth is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham in the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics. She spends her time teaching and writing about storytelling, especially focusing on the stories that people tell in social media contexts. She has written several books including Stories and Social Media, and was the lead author of the student textbook, Researching the Language of Social Media . Ruth enjoys working collaboratively, and led the Research Network, Transforming Thresholds (2012-14), which explored how museums could use their entrance spaces to improve visitor experience. She is the Editor of Discourse, Context & Media, and convenes BAAL’s Special Interest Group for Language and New Media. After having done a deep research Ruth will share with the audience the insights and power of storytelling in social media. It will definitely be a must listen talk, knowing the current power of social media for both business and personal purposes.
