In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Ella Sinclair

Interior Designer and Artist
Ella Sinclair is an interior designer and artist based in Vancouver. Although grounded and content today, Ella’s teen years were fraught with struggle, anguish, and isolation. Ella speaks openly about how early traumas, bullying, and an unhealthy desire for control and perfectionism leading her to anorexia, and the long difficult fight to regain her health and sanity. She opens up about how easy it is to shut down and barricade yourself from life, rather than facing your realities – no matter how painful they may be. Through intense personal recovery work, Ella has learned the importance of thinking positively and believing in yourself, even if you don’t always know where you’re going. A consummate networker, Ella embraces seeing the similarities in each other rather than the differences. Now an ardent optimist, Ella shares her story and hard-earned wisdom, hoping in turn to both inspire and show others how life delivers its lessons in strange packages.

Emre Alca

Aspiring Futurist
Emre Alca has been fascinated with the Future since he first read William Gibson’s Neuromancer. After which, he continued to read the fictions of William Gibson, Jorge Luis Borges, William S. Burroughs, and Franz Kafka. Through his passion for speculative fiction (fiction of a grounded, speculative extension of reality) he has become involved with many underground internet subcultures. Emre is very open about such obscurities, and enjoys sharing such passions with others rather than working to maintain their elusive nature. Emre recently launched his new website anomaloustautology.com. When Emre not diving into the depths of the web, he can be found training for rowing, making new visual art, or reading.

Zehan Zhou

Beekeeping Enthusiast
Zehan Zhou (name meaning “one who gives greatly”) has been mesmerized with the natural world ever since he was three when his parents first gave him a picture book about animals. His interest in nature has progressed onto owning a wide variety of pets, binge-watching nature documentaries, and has even led him to be a beekeeper of four years. Throughout, he has accumulated a good repertoire of beekeeping lore and he bears all the wounds to prove it. Zehan has spoken many times about his hobby, whether it be presenting at the St. George’s Global Stewardship Conference to leading Grade 10s through wax workshops and even showing Grade 1s about the secret life of bees. When Zehan is not a beekeeper, he is a fluent speaker of five languages, a gourmand, a skier, a political scientist, and a casual philosopher. He hopes to be able to bring agriculture back to our increasingly urban lives and to better raise awareness of the plight of our bees.
