You are cordially invited to the next TEDxTheHague salon! Our October edition — themed Love, Lies and Technology — is curated by TEDxTheHague:

"Is it possible to love well without lying? Romantics have argued that love will lead us to The Honest Truth. Both about ourselves as well as the ones we love. But from an early start, love and lies — or well-intentioned untruths — often go hand in hand. Are we sentenced to sustain our relationships with deception, or is there a way out?"

We'll explore this theme by watching and discussing the following videos:

Kang Lee: Can you really tell if a kid is lying?
Are children poor liars? Do you think you can easily detect their lies? Developmental researcher Kang Lee studies what happens physiologically to children when they lie. They do it a lot, starting as young as two years old, and they're actually really good at it. Lee explains why we should celebrate when kids start to lie and presents new lie-detection technology that could someday reveal our hidden emotions.

Helen Fisher: Technology hasn't changed love. Here's why
In our tech-driven, interconnected world, we've developed new ways and rules to court each other, but the fundamental principles of love have stayed the same, says anthropologist Helen Fisher. In this energetic tell-all from the front lines of love, learn how our faster connections are actually leading to slower, more intimate relationships.

Alain de Botton: On Love
Philosopher Alain de Botton lays out his ideas on love in the modern world. De Botton believes Romanticism has been a disaster for our relationships. He states that this intellectual and spiritual movement has had a devastating impact on the ability of ordinary people to lead successful emotional lives.
