After we Accepted the Challenge of TEDxUHasselt2016, our sixth and most successful event in the last five years, the team did not rest on its laurels. To the contrary, the team has been busy with the preparation of a TEDx Salon, which aims for a closer-knit and cosier gathering of our community and speakers focused on a more specific theme. After months of hard work, TEDxUHasselt is proud to announce TEDxUHasseltSalon2016! As usual we have selected very impressive contributions for you! With our conference theme ‘Life Is Science’ we want to take you back to the core foundations of TEDxUHasselt, which is all about diverse and state-of-art ideas worth spreading but this time more focussed towards life and biomedical sciences.

TEDxUHasseltSalon2016, Life is Science will bring together four speakers on the cutting edge of biomedical and life science inquiry. Join us on the evening of Wednesday 30th of November, from 7pm onwards.

Jack van Horssen

Neurobiologist Jack Van Horssen is someone who developed a very passionate interest in the complexity of the human central nervous system and its pathologies. After spending many years behind the microscope, he can tell you how the most miniscule detail could make all the difference. During this time, he became very intrigued about the understanding of pathological alterations that drive the disease progression of multiple sclerosis.

Koen Vanmechelen

Koen Vanmechelen is an internationally renowned Belgian artist who has presented his work in almost all continents of world…Showcasing his work in many countries namely, from the U.S. to China and from Senegal (AFRICA) all the way to Iceland…he has seen it all. As an artist, Koen is most known for his exceptional project on his artistic-scientific breeding of chickens. He started this project in the year 2000, aiming to create a TRULY cosmopolitan chicken from chicken breeds of the world…A peculiar metaphor for the multicultural society we live in today.

Saskia Lippens

Junior Expert Technologist
Saskia Lippens is a molecular biologist trained at Ghent University. From her post-doctoral studies, she developed a special taste for technology. Today she co-manages VIB’s cutting edge platform called Bio-Imaging Core. They offer specialised instrumentation and services for both light - and electron microscopy.

Steven Boeynaems

Phd student
When molecular biology and bioengineering come together…well then Steven Boeynaems, scientist at VIB-KULeuven, is their love-child. Thankfully he uses his knowledge for the good of society by trying to unravel the molecular underpinnings of ALS. By approaching it from a completely different angle, his aim is to provide new insights into the working mechanisms of this terrible disease.
