In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Bongeka Masango

Bongeka Masango is the camerawoman, director and editor of the fearless vlogging trio, Pap Culture. Pap Culture founded their own YouTube channel which is born and bred in South Africa, and addresses the consumption of knowledge, current affairs and pop culture, from the perspective of young African women.

Dr Imogen Wright

Dr. Imogen Wright is the 2016 runner-up for the Innovation Prize for Africa for Exatype, a groundbreaking drug resistance testing product. A recovering theoretical physicist turned bioinformatics software developer, Imogen asks if we can slow the spread of drug resistance, before we run out of effective drugs to treat common infections.

Dr Sindiwe Magona

Author and Storyteller
For nearly thirty years, Sindiwe Magona has been authoring the lives of South Africans from a broad range of ethnic and economic backgrounds. Her probing and poignant stories, poem, articles, and plays examine the ever-thorny challenges within the apartheid and post-apartheid world. Her first published works, To My Children's Children and Forced To Grow, coming on the cusp of the new Democracy, provide further evidence to the local and global community of the influence of prejudice but not its victory. With a particularly acute perspective of woman's issues in strife-ridden South Africa, Magona's expansive genre of literary works reveal the anguish of the domestic worker who daily beats back the wolf of poverty from her door as found in her award-winning short story collection.

Eve Annecke

Eve Annecke is a co-founder of the Sustainability Institute and is intrigued by indigenous practice in an approach to child-centred human development, in nature. Join her as she takes us on a journey through Southern African and Native American traditions, and explores lessons from tribes of the Amazon, modern day magicians and mythologists from England.

Kagure Mugo

Kagure Mugo is the intoxicatingly scary gatekeeper of HOLAAfrica, an online Pan African queer womanist community dealing with sexuality and all things woman. and a Youth Fellow for the Open Society Foundation. She is also a writer, digital and social media consultant and freelance journalist who tackles sex, politics and other less interesting topics. During weekends she is a wine bar philosopher and polymath for no pay.

Nwabisa Mda

Nwabisa Mda is a junior strategist by day, and one of the vibrant presenters in the fearless vlogging trio, Pap Culture. Pap Culture founded their own YouTube channel which is born and bred in South Africa, and addresses the consumption of knowledge, current affairs and pop culture, from the perspective of young African women.

Siphumeze Khundayi

Siphumeze Khundayi is a multi-disciplinary freelance performer and photographer who these mediums as a means of activism, focusing particularly on issues of identity which was informed by her Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies and Drama and her Honours degree in Gender and Transformation (UCT). This links to the work she does as Artistic Director of HOLAAfrica, a web based platform raise awareness surrounding issues of African female sexuality. She currently forms part of Drama4Life Playback Theatre Company; has had performances in Artscape Women’s Festival, Drama 4 Life, GIPCA Live Art and Cape Town Fringe, Infecting the City, and Vrystaat Kunstefees.

Siya "Umlilo" Ngcobo

Siya Ngcobo is a multi-disciplinary performance artist whose stage personality “Umlilo” introduced a blend of social media, technology and the avant garde as an artform he refers to as “kwaai diva”. For the TEDx audience Umlilo will blend performance and a talk to share his idea worth spreading.

Thembekile Mahlaba

Thembekile Mahlaba recently graduated with an Honours Degree in Drama, specialising in Directing. She is one of the lively presenters in the fearless vlogging trio, Pap Culture. Pap Culture founded their own YouTube channel which is born and bred in South Africa, and addresses the consumption of knowledge, current affairs and pop culture, from the perspective of young African women.
